BMW PGA Championship
Wednesday 10th September – Sunday 14th September 2025
History of the BMW PGA Championship & Wentworth
-
The tournament was founded in 1955 by the Professional Golfers’ Association, originally called the British PGA Championship.
-
The Wentworth Club (Surrey, England) has long been strongly associated with the Event: since 1984 the tournament has been played on Wentworth’s West Course under its current main “home” venue arrangement.
-
Wentworth itself was founded in 1922; the West Course was designed by Harry Colt (1920s) and has undergone changes over time.
-
BMW has been the title sponsor since 2005.
-
The BMW PGA Championship is considered the flagship event of the DP World Tour (formerly European Tour). It occupies a prominent place in the ranking system (world ranking points) and has often offered one of the largest purses in the European Tour schedule.
-
In recent years the tournament moved from May to September (2019) in line with schedule revamps in global golf.
Venue – Wentworth Club, West Course
-
Wentworth Club is in Virginia Water, Surrey. It has multiple courses, but the West Course is the championship venue for this event.
-
The West Course is a par-72 layout, approximately 7,267 yards for this tournament.
-
It has been modified over time; for instance Ernie Els did work on the West Course (redesigning, adding length and bunkers etc).
Key Past Moments & Records
-
Some standout winners: Colin Montgomerie won three years in a row (1998-2000) ‒ only one to do that.
-
The “to-par” record for the modern tournament is around −21 (An Byeong-hun in 2015).
-
In 2024, Billy Horschel won after a playoff, beating Rory McIlroy and Thriston Lawrence.
