AFC Bournemouth, based on the South Coast of England, are a historic club that were founded back in 1899 as Boscombe, which makes them almost 130 years old. They played their football at King’s Park, before then moving to their current ground, known for sponsorship reasons as the Vitality Stadium. It is also known as Dean’s Court, which was inspired by the name of the local street and benefactor back in 1910, J.E. Cooper.

The Cherries is a nickname that is thought to have been simply derived from the colour of their red shirts. In the present day, they are amongst the most exciting teams to watch in the Premier League under the stewardship of their current Head Coach Andoni Iraola, who has been in charge since replacing Gary O’Neil in June 2023.

The most recent silverware that was won by the club was the EFL Championship title back in the 2014/15 season, when the side, then led by Eddie Howe, took the second tier by storm, finishing at the summit of the table with as many as 90 points in the end after winning 26, drawing 12 and losing 8 of their 46 matches. They were able to finish just a point ahead of the runners-up, Watford.

The club also won the Football League Trophy (Associate Members’ Cup) once, doing so back in the 1983/84 season after they were able to beat Hull City 2 – 1 thanks to goals from the likes of Milton Graham (27’) and Paul Morrell (73’).

Last season, Bournemouth were one of many clubs to battle for a place in European Football for the 2025/26 season, and whilst they failed by finishing outside of the top seven, they will know that they are capable of taking that extra step to secure a place in Europe for the first time in this club’s incredible and extensive history.

AFC Bournemouth Football Club – 2025/26 Premier League

AFC Bournemouth is a club that has a history stretching back to its founding as Boscombe FC in 1899. They play their matches at the Vitality Stadium as one of only two clubs based on the South Coast to be currently playing their football at the top table of English Football alongside Brighton.

The Cherries are currently under the stewardship of their Spanish Head Coach Andoni Iraola, who has been in charge ever since his appointment was confirmed following the departure of Gary O’Neil back on Monday, 19th June 2023. He has been in charge ever since, and there has been consistent improvement following his arrival at the club.

Last season, Bournemouth were among the clubs that were battling for a place in Europe ahead of the 2025/26 season. They unfortunately failed, but still managed to finish in a very respectable 9th place, accumulating a total of 56 points from their 38 games that term.

They will also be looking back at some very memorable results from last season, where they were able to beat the likes of Arsenal (2 – 0 & 2 – 1), Manchester City (2 – 1), Tottenham (1 – 0), Manchester United (3 – 0), Newcastle United (4 – 1), Nottingham Forest (5 – 0), Southampton (3 – 1), Fulham (1 – 0), and Everton (3 – 0).

They have signed Serbian Goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic from fellow English Club Chelsea for what was a rumoured transfer fee of £25 million. The Vitality Stadium has been the home of AFC Bournemouth ever since the Cherries moved there from King’s Park back in 1910. It has been the club’s home throughout so much of its history, including more recent times when it has seen the club climb the football pyramid up to the Premier League and battle for European Football. Even before all of this, the stadium has seen the club battling for its very existence.

Bournemouth fans will hope that the Vitality Stadium will be part of more historic moments this season and beyond. This season, the Cherries will have eyes on taking that extra step and therefore qualify for European Football thanks to a top seven finish.

Bournemouth History

Bournemouth is a club that has an extensive history, with the Cherries having been in existence ever since 1899, when they were initially called ‘Boscombe FC’, with ‘Boscombe’ still being a nickname of the club to this day.

Before the positivity of recent times, this club has gone through its fair share of hardship. Former boss Eddie Howe took charge aged just 31 in December 2008 with the club still 10 points adrift of safety in League Two, thanks to their points deduction. In what turned out to be the ultimate ‘great escape’, a 2 – 1 win over Grimsby Town in the final home game of the campaign saw them retain their English Football League status. And they then went on to what was going to be an incredible rise up the leagues.

Under the stewardship of several managers, the Cherries climbed from the fourth to the top tier of football in England in just 6 years. The 2009/10 season saw them promoted to League One, which was followed by a promotion to the EFL Championship in the 2012/13 campaign. The promotion to the second tier followed the return of Eddie Howe in October 2012.

The South Coast club did not remain in the Championship for long, with them going on to win their most recent piece of silverware in the form of the EFL Championship league title when the 2014/15 season had concluded. They had earned a total of 90 points from their 46 matches, beating runners-up Watford to the summit by just one point in the end.

Since then, the club has only missed out on one season in the Premier League, which came in the 2021/22 season when they finished in second place following relegation the season before. Other than that, they have been one of the few promoted clubs in recent times to retain their place in the top flight before going on to have a prolonged stay in the Premier League.

Last season (2024/25), they narrowly missed out on European Football by a margin of 9 points. They ended up with a 9th place finish, with 56 points having been earned from their 38 games overall.
