History of The Saracens Showdown
The Showdown has captured the imagination of fans of all clubs ever since it was established. 2022 saw the showdown take place at the Tottenham Hotspur for the very first time, in what was also the first ever rugby union match to take place at this venue.
Saracens faced the Bristol Bears on 26th March 2022, in what turned out to be a tight and competitive contest which Saracens were able to eventually win 27-23. A crowd of more than 40,000 fans made for an incredible atmosphere.
They did have to come from behind, but tries from Max Malins (2) and Elliot Daly, together with 12 points being scored by Owen Farrell, ensured a crucial victory in the Gallagher Premiership. Mark McCall’s side went on settle for 2nd place after narrowly missing out on the Premiership title to the Leicester Tigers by 7 points. Meanwhile, the Bristol Bears ended up in 10th place with 48 points.
In March 2023, where Saracens took on Harlequins in that showdown at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. A 36 – 24 win against Harlequins secured their spot in the 2022/23 Premiership semi-finals, strengthening their hopes of winning the title for the 6th time, and their first since 2019.
Tries from Alex Lozowski, Nick Tompkins, Andy Christie, Sean Maitland and Maro Itoje helped Saracens to victory in North London.
The most recent ‘Showdown’ was played in North London in March 2024, and it saw a record crowd of more than 61,000 witness a record 52 – 7 victory for Saracens over their fierce rivals, Harlequins. This game was also a perfect way for Owen Farrell to mark his 250th game for Saracens.
Stars of the England National Team, Jamie George, Ben Earl and new Saracens Captain Maro Itoje are set to take part in this highly prestigious fixture in the 5th Showdown.
