History Of The Event
This splendid sporting event represents one of the most revered occasions within the annual tennis calendar. First introduced in 1970, the tournament has been hosted by some of the world’s most renowned cities including Tokyo, Paris, Barcelona, New York and Shanghai – before eventually moving to The O2, London in 2009.
Since making its move to the capital, the tournament has become firmly established as one of the most popular sporting events in the UK, regularly attracting record-breaking crowds.
The competition operates with an alternative format to the other seasonal Grand Slam Tournaments. In this case, the world’s eight elite players are split into two groups of four and compete in a three-game round-robin contest. The two players with the best records within each group progress to the semi-finals with the winners meeting for a scintillating final showdown.
The groups are respectively referred to as the Stan Smith Group and the Ilie Nastase Group, in recognition of the two original players to win the inaugural trophy.
Swiss sensation, Roger Federer, is the current holder of the all-time singles title record, having won the trophy a resounding six times, whilst John McEnroe and Peter Fleming hold the doubles title record with seven victories.
This year’s competition will certainly make for a thrilling spectacle.
