More about the Davis Cup:
The Davis Cup has a long history having been founded more than 120 years ago in 1900 with the United States beating Great Britain in the first ever tournament 3-0. Back in those days, only these two nations took part, but nowadays 155 countries are being represented in the Davis Cup. The US won it again in 1902 before the UK won the next 3 in a row (1904 – 1906).
It was not until 1927 that someone who was not the UK, USA or Australasia (now Australia) won the Davis Cup with France taking home the title that year. France then went on to win it 5 times in the next 5 years between 1928 and 1932. The UK, USA and Australia then resumed their dominance until South Africa won the Davis Cup in 1974.
5 years earlier in 1969, the competition expanded so that 50 countries would compete for the Davis Cup for the very first time. Fast forward to 1981 and the format was changed once again to a 16 nation World Group with nations split into regional zone groups with promotion and relegation now a factor. The 1980s were dominated by Sweden and Germany with 3 wins and 6 wins in this decade respectively.
In 2019, the current format was introduced with 18 nations in one venue, with the most recent winner (in 2022) being Canada, who were able to defeat Australia 2-0.
The most recent win for Great Britain came in 2015 when Belgium were defeated 3-1 in Ghent, Belgium.
After finishing top of Group B, Great Britain have been drawn against Serbia in the Davis Cup Final 8, with ties set to take place between 21st and 26th November 2023. It was three wins from three in the Group Stages for Great Britain – they were 2-1 winners against Australia, before they went on to beat Switzerland and France by the same score line.
The ties for the Final 8 are to be as follows:
- Serbia v Great Britain
- Canada v Finland
- Czech Republic v Australia
- Italy v Netherlands
The country with the most Davis Cup wins is the United States with 32, followed by Australia (28), Great Britain (10), France (10), Sweden (7) and Spain (6).
