Rick Astley is one of the most popular and successful solo artists in the world, and he has enjoyed a great amount of success over his decades long career to date. Astley is set to perform at the iconic Henley Festival in July, with him set to perform some of his most famous hits on the Floating Stage on the third day of the festival on Friday 11th July 2025.

On the popular music streaming platform Spotify, Rick Astley’s music is collectively enjoying more than 8.7 million listeners per month. Perhaps unsurprisingly, 1987’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ is his most popular song on the platform, with more than 941.9 million listens, and it is followed by ‘Together Forever’ with more than 161.1 million, which is a song that was also released back in 1987.

We now rewind to 1987, and with the aid of Stock Aitken Waterman, he first gained widespread fame thanks to his debut album that was released that year, ‘Whenever You Need Somebody’, which would go on to sell no less than 15 million copies worldwide, whilst being certified platinum by the BPI and the RIAA.

This album is of course most famous for the single ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’, which was a number 1 hit in 25 countries, whilst also staying at the top of the UK Chart for five weeks in a row in 1987. It also won him the Brit Award for Best British Single in 1988. Also in 1988 ‘Together Forever’ was released, and it would go on to go top of the US Billboard Hot 100. This is one of his eight songs to have reached the UK Singles Chart’s Top 10 to date. In 1989, he was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, but he would go on to lose out to Tracy Chapman.

His second album, also released in 1998 was called ‘Hold Me in Your Arms’, which was to go on to be certified Platinum and Gold internationally, and one of its singles, ‘She Wants to Dance with Me’ was a top ten hit worldwide. 1991’s ‘Cry For Help’, reached the top ten, and in 1993 he retired from music.

This retirement thankfully turned out to be temporary, with Astley returning to the music industry at the turn of the century in 2000. His album ’50’, first released back in 2016, topped the charts, and it included covers of famous hits like ‘As It Was’ by Harry Styles, and ‘Highway To Hell’ by AC/DC.

Rick Astley’s most recent studio album, ‘Are We There Yet’, was released back in 2023, and it included songs such as ‘Dippin My Feet’, ‘Never Gonna Stop’, ‘Forever and More’, and ‘Driving Me Crazy’.

Throughout his illustrious and highly successful career to date, Rick Astley has sold approximately 40 million records worldwide. In the UK, he also had a top 40 single every week for the first six months of his career, which is an astonishing feat. On YouTube, his song ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ was just the fourth song from the 1980s to achieve 1 billion views.
