The Amgen Irish Open has a tremendous history, and this famous tournament was founded all the way back in 1927, known then simply as the Irish Open. Its first sponsorship came in 1975, and it was then known as the Carroll’s Irish Open until its name was changed again thanks to a new sponsor, this time in the form of Murphy’s in 1994, which lasted until 2002.

Car manufacturer Nissan then became the sponsor of the Irish Open between 2003 and 2006. The next major sponsorship of this illustrious tournament came in 2015 with Dubai Duty Free, before it was then known as the Horizon Irish Open from 2022 to 2023. 2024 was Amgen’s first year as title sponsor.

The first ever winner of the Irish Open was Scotland’s George Duncan, who did so after fending off competition from runner-up Henry Cotton by a margin of just one stroke. This was Duncan’s first and final victory in this tournament.

Fast forward to 2023, and the winner of the Amgen Irish Open that year was Swedish player Vincent Norrman, who, just like George Duncan had almost 100 years before, won by a margin of just 1 stroke. The runner-up last year was Germany’s Hurly Long.

Then came the 2024 Irish Open, which saw Rasmus Hojgaard who emerged victorious at 9 under par by the tournament’s end. Rory McIlroy came a very close second on 8 under par, with the Northern Irishman coming tantalisingly close to victory.

McIlroy then returned to the most recent tournament in 2025, and he did so as the reigning Champion of The Masters after a playoff victory at Augusta against Justin Rose.

In the 2025 Irish Open, Rory McIlroy managed to win his second ever win in this prestigious tournament at The K Club, beating runner-up Joakim Lagergren in a tense play-off thanks to an incredible birdie at the third extra hole. It had not been simple at all for the home favourite after he and Lagergren had finished the 18 holes level at 17 under par.

It was an amazing effort from McIlroy to even be level on par with his Swedish counterpart. On the final day, he was four strokes behind Adrien Saddier before then further falling behind thanks to what was a bogey at the first hole. Though he did recover with a birdie and then a par in the hole after that.

At the fifth, he got yet another birdie, and was in a share of the lead after the ninth hole, where he got a par.

Fast forward to later on in the day at the 15th hole, McIlroy did find the water, before then still managing to get par. Lagergren did get two birdies in a row as he looked likely to win the Irish Open ahead of Rory, though McIlory did manage an incredible eagle, which took it to a play-off for a win.

This comeback from the home favourite led to some wild celebrations amongst those in the crowd, and the golfer himself as well.

Rory McIlroy then sealed the win via this play-off, when his birdie at the third extra hole saw him come out on top in the end.

All eyes will be on the next Amgen Irish Open in 2026, where McIlroy will hope to defend his title.

There have been some big names in the past who have emerged victorious in the Irish Open. This includes the likes of Colin Montgomerie (1996, 1997 & 2001), Bernhard Langer (1984, 1987 & 1994), Nick Faldo (1991, 1992 & 1993) and Seve Ballesteros (1983, 1985 & 1986). The three players just mentioned also hold the joint record for the most wins for a player at the Irish Open with no less than 3 each.

As of the time of writing, Nick Faldo is the only player to have won the Amgen Irish Open in three consecutive years.

Opened in 2002, the Trump International Golf Links & Hotel in Doonbeg in Ireland will host this tournament for the first time ever in 2026. The Golf Club was originally designed by ex professional golf player Greg Norman, with him having been responsible for more than 100 golf courses across the world.

The site was purchased back in 2014 by the now President of the United States Donald Trump, and it has now been transformed into a resort that is home to a golf course that has no less than 18 holes, whilst also covering over 1.5 miles. It is a truly spectacular course that is also accompanied by a luxurious five star hotel that is located just a short distance away from the action.

This will be the 22nd different venue to have hosted the prestigious Amgen Irish Open in it’s history, with Rory McIlroy looking to win the tournament for a second year in a row, and for a third time in his very successful career as a player to date.

Our Amgen Irish Open Hospitality offers you and your guests and clients the chance to not only enjoy some world class golf, but also some top class hospitality that will, without a doubt, make the experience absolutely unforgettable.
