The highlight race on King George Day is the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. It boasts a star-studded line-up, and in 2026 it will be Britain’s richest ever race with prize money for the winner being an incredible £2 million.

King George Day is often regarded as one of Europe’s midsummer middle-distance showpieces, attracting the finest horses from across the continent for this historic meeting.

Built for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 1951, the race quickly became the most prestigious middle-distance event, and it will now be the richest race itself on the British racing calendar.

When attending one of Ascot’s greatest meetings, you look forward to seeing previously crowned winners. Previous winners include the likes of Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Brigadier Gerard, Shergar, Nashwan, Galileo and three-time winner Enable.

The action on King George Day in 2025 was enthralling. The winner of the most recent renewal of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes was Calandagan,  ridden by Jockey Mickael Barzalona, coming from behind to win by a length at the post. This was a second consecutive win for French trainer Francis-Henri Graffard, after his win in 2025 with Goliath.

The runner-up was Oisin Murphy on board Kalpana, whilst it was Rebel’s Romance, ridden by William Buick, who had to settle for what was a 3rd place finish in the end.

Anticipation is growing for another day full of enthralling action in July 2026, with the next winner of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes set to be crowned.
