Ricky Gervais is one of the United Kingdom’s most iconic and respected comedians, and he is set to take to the stage at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham as part of his ‘Mortality’ Tour on Tuesday 28th January 2025. He is set to take the Second City by storm in what promises to be an incredible night with plenty of laughs in store.
In the world of television, Gervais is best known for his comedy shows such as The Office UK (2001 – 2003), Extras (2005 – 2007), Derek (2012 – 2014), and most recently ‘After Life’, which was a big hit on streaming platform Netflix from 2019 to 2022. He has also made appearances on ‘The Sketch Show’ on ITV and as a regular on ‘The 11 O’Clock Show’ on Channel 4 in the late 1990s.
Over the course of his career in television and stand-up comedy, he has so far won no less than 7 BAFTA Awards, 4 Golden Globes, 2 Primetime Emmys, and he was included at number 11 in a Channel 4 list of the Greatest Ever Stand-Up Comedy acts in 2007.

The award winning stand-up comedian Ricky Gervais is set to take Birmingham by storm when he performs on stage at the Utilita Arena in the Second City as part of his ‘Mortality’ Tour on Tuesday 28th January 2025. Demand for tickets is set to be high for this performance from one of the most popular British comedians in the world.
To date, the comic has won a plethora of awards for his work in his career so far in both television and stand-up comedy.
Gervais has won 5 BAFTA Awards, doing so in the following categories for both ‘The Office’ and ‘Extras’: Best Situation Comedy (2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006) and Best Comedy Performance (2002, 2003 and 2006). He was also nominated as Best Writer for both shows in 2004 and 2007 respectively.
In terms of Golden Globe Awards, he has won in categories for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy (2003 & 2007), Best Actor – Television Series or Comedy (2003), and Best Stand-Up Comedy Award for his Netflix stand-up comedy show ‘Ricky Gervais: Armageddon’ in 2024.
His two primetime Emmys to date were awarded him for Outstanding Comedy Series for ‘The Office’ back in 2004, whilst he also won the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Award for ‘Extras’ in 2007.
After a brief stint in the world of music, Gervais began his career in the world of comedy back in the late 1990s, getting his break on the hit satirical comedy series ‘The 11 O’Clock Show’ on Channel 4, where he was a regular between 1998 and 2000. He was lauded during his time on the show for his sharp wit and his outspoken nature.
In 2000, he got his own show, Meet Rickey Gervais, which was a spoof talk show that aired that year.
In 2001, he was successful in his performance in his show named ‘Rubbernecker’ at that year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Other comics, including the likes of Jimmy Carr and Stephen Merchant were also present.
He then embarked on his UK ‘Animals’ Tour in 2003, followed by his ‘Politics’ Tour a year later in 2004. ‘Fame’ then arrived in 2007, with his show in Blackpool selling out in just 45 minutes.
His ‘Ricky Gervais Live: Science Tour’ began in August 2009 was staged at Wembley, Madison Square Garden, the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, as well as at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow.
Fast forward to 2018, he performed at the famous Hammersmith Apollo with a show named ‘Ricky Gervais: Humanity’, which was released on the global streaming platform Netflix in March of that year. A further comedy special ‘Ricky Gervais: Armageddon’ came out on Netflix a few years later on 25th December 2023, bringing with it critical acclaim.
Ricky Gervais’ most recent venture into television was the comedy-drama ‘After Life’, which was released on Netflix on 8th March 2019. It featured Gervais as Tony Johnson, with the cast also featuring other popular comics including Diane Morgan, Tom Basden, Tony Way, and Kerry Godliman.
He has also had roles in movies, starring in roles in three Night at the Museum films, Ghost Town, and Muppets Most Wanted.
Gervais has recently embarked on his latest tour, the Mortality Tour, which is going to see him perform around the world, in famous European Cities such as Lisbon, Paris, Dublin, Vienna, Oslo, and Zurich.
He will also be performing at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham on Tuesday 28th January 2025.
