The roots of this band start in 1992 with the formation of Soil, but it was disbanded after only two years, which led to the formation of the System Of The Down.
Formed in Los Angeles back in 1994, the band itself are unique for their blend of metal, alternative rock and Armenian Folk Music. The current band members include the likes of Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian, and John Dolmayan. Dolmayan, replaced founding member and original drummer Andy Khachaturian back in 1997.
As of the time of writing, this band enjoys more than 24.5 million listeners of their music per month on popular streaming platform Spotify, with their most popular song on there at the moment being 2001’s ‘Chop Suey’ on more than 1.7 million listens per month, which is closely followed by ‘Toxicity’ on more than 1.3 million.
The first album released by the band, ‘System of a Down’ was released in June 1998, with its most popular tracks including ‘Sugar’ and ‘Spiders’, with the videos for these songs also becoming popular on MTV. By February 2000 it was certified gold, before becoming certified platinum the following year. It has since become certified double platinum.
Their second album, ‘Toxicity’, was released on 4th September 2001, and it debuted at number one on American and Canadian charts before going on to achieve triple platinum certification in the United States. Popular tracks include ‘Chop Suey!’ and ‘Toxicity’, with the latter being listed at number 14 spot in VH1’s list of the 40 Greatest Metal Songs back in May 2006.
System of a Down’s third album, ‘Steal This Album!’ was released in November 2002, and it peaked at number 15 in the US Billboard 200 Chart. One of the standout tracks is ‘Innervision’, whilst other songs on this particular album also includes ‘Boom!’, ‘Bubbles’, ‘I-E-A-I-A-I-O’, ‘36’, ‘Highway Song’, and ‘Roulette’.
Their two most recent studio albums ‘Mezmerize’ and ‘Hypnotize’ were both released back in 2005. Starting with the former, it debuted at number one in countries like the United States, Canada, and Australia, and it was the band’s second album to achieve this feat, with first week sales exceeding 800,000 copies. The lead single ‘B.Y.O.B.’ went on to win the Band the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
The latter album, ‘Hypnotize’, debuted at number 1 in the US upon release, making System of the Down only the fourth artist to have ever had two studio albums released in the same year debut at number one. They joined the likes of The Beatles, 2Pac, and DMX in doing so.
The singles ‘Aerials’ and ‘Hypnotize’ both reached number one in Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart.
In May 2006, the band went on a hiatus which eventually came to an end on 29th November 2010 when they officially confirmed their return with them going on a Europe-wide tour in June 2011.
