The Emirates Old Trafford Cricket Ground is set to host England’s third IT20 match against Australia on 15th September 2024. These two nations enjoy a heated rivalry and have played against each other for over 140 years.

They played against each other for the first time in 1877; the most famous fixtures between them are when England faces Australia in the annual Ashes Series. England won 8 Ashes Series in a row between 1882 and 1890.

Fast forward to the present day, and who could forget the 2023 Ashes, where a Chris Woakes-inspired England put in a sensational performance in the final Test to win by 49 runs, levelling the series at 2 – 2. This was something for the fans and players to cheer about despite the overall defeat.

England are the current IT20 World Champions, and this should see them come into this fixture full of confidence. Pakistan stood in England’s way in the 2022 Final, and in the end, England won by five wickets. It was a fantastic performance, and it was Ben Stokes who got his team over the line after hitting an extraordinary half-century.

This was England’s second IT20 World Cup title, and interestingly, their first came against Australia in 2010. Craig Kieswetter and Kevin Pietersen added 111 runs for the second wicket as they chased Australia’s 147/6 – Kieswetter scored 63 from 49 balls, whilst Pietersen got 47 off 31 balls. Paul Collingwood and Eoin Morgan saw England home to victory by seven wickets with three overs to spare.

England and Australia have met at Old Trafford in an IT20 fixture before, most recently on 30th August 2009. Unfortunately, the match had to be abandoned due to the adverse weather conditions. No result was declared.

Jos Buttler is England’s leading batsman in IT20 cricket. He scored 2,713 runs from 1,883 balls in matches between 2011 and 2023. Buttler managed this run total from 106 matches and 98 innings in total. In 115 matches and 107 innings, Eoin Morgan is second with 2,458 runs from 1,499 balls between 2009 and 2022.

Speaking of Buttler, he is England’s current white ball Captain after taking over from Eoin Morgan in June 2022. Hopes will be high that Buttler can lead his team to more IT20 success against one of their fiercest rivals at Old Trafford.

England and Australia have faced each other 23 times in T20 internationals. Australia have won 10 while England have won 11 times. Two matches ended in no result.
