England v Australia Hospitality – One Day International (ODI) 2024 – Riverside Cricket Ground
An intense rivalry is set to be renewed when England comes face to face with Australia at the Riverside Ground when they meet in a One Day International (ODI) on Tuesday 24th September 2024. The two nations meet most frequently in the annual Ashes series, and England won the first inaugural Ashes in 1882/83, then the second Ashes in 1884.
England’s most recent encounter with Australia was in the 2023 Ashes Series, which took place from 16th June to 1st August 2023. Australia did win the first and second tests by two wickets and 43 runs, respectively, to clinch a 2 – 0 advantage going into the third test at Headingley. England were able to halve the deficit with a victory being secured by a margin of 3 wickets.
This third test was not only notable because of the victory, it was also a match that saw history being made. Firstly, Moeen Ali took his 200th Test wicket in 66 matches, while Ben Stokes reached 10,000 runs in first-class cricket. Harry Brook also scored his 1,000th run in Test Cricket.
The opportunity to draw the series level came in the fourth test at Old Trafford, but Australia retained the Ashes with the game ending in a draw. The fifth test was an opportunity for the Three Lions to draw the series level – in an intense match, England put in a fantastic performance to win by 49 runs. Despite losing the series, England came away on a high after a sensational performance at The Oval.
There have been many memorable moments between England and Australia over the years. One such moment came in the 2009 edition of the Ashes series – with the Three Lions holding on at 233 – 9 and were six runs away from an innings defeat. James Anderson and Monty Panesar then established a sensational partnership that saw them both defy the pressure and efforts of Australia’s bowlers to earn England a draw in the first test. England went on to win the series 2 – 1.
Australia has the edge on England in One Day International cricket with 84 wins in 152 meetings compared to the Three Lions’ 63.
