England v Australia Hospitality – Vitality IT20 2024 – Sophia Gardens Cricket Ground
The latest chapter of a distinguished and prestigious rivalry is set to be written at Sophia Gardens when England comes face to face with Australia in the 2nd IT20 on Friday, 13th September 2024. Having first met in competitive international cricket in 1877, this is one of the oldest and most famous fixtures in the history of cricket.
It was in 2005 that these two rivals met for the very first time in IT20 cricket, playing each other at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton on 13th June that year. England won by an emphatic margin of 100 runs after proceedings came to a close.
The most recent IT20 Series to have taken place between these two fierce rivals occurred between 9th and 14th October 2022. England won the 1st IT20 in Perth by eight runs, and this stellar and all-important victory was backed up in the 2nd IT20 in the Australian Capital of Canberra a few days later on 12th October 2022, with England making it 2 – 0 after once again winning by a margin of 8 wickets. This sealed the IT20 series victory for England before the third and final IT20 fixture.
The third IT20, also in Canberra, did not finish due to it being called off as a result of the adverse weather conditions.
England are the current IT20 World Champions, a title they won after beating Pakistan by a margin of 5 wickets with six balls remaining on Sunday, 13th November 2022. They emerged victorious after a tightly contested battle, and they secured a second IT20 World Title, their first since beating Australia in the 2010 IT20 World Cup Final by a margin of 7 wickets. England hopes to continue their positive run of form in IT20 cricket against Australia.
They, of course, met recently in the 2023 Ashes Series, where even though Australia did win the series in the end overall, England did manage to make a stellar comeback to level the series at 2-2 in the final Test at The Oval in London.
Following their 2022 IT20 World Cup win, England became the first international men’s team in history to hold both the ODI (50-over) and T20 World Cup titles simultaneously.
Jos Buttler is currently England’s IT20 White Ball Captain. He took over from Eoin Morgan back on 30th June 2022. Buttler also holds the record for the most runs recorded in IT20 cricket for England, with 2,713 runs from 1,883 balls faced between 2011 and 2023. Morgan comes second in this metric, scoring a grand total of 2,458 runs from 1,805 balls faced in England IT20 matches.
