Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal will be going head-to-head with an Atletico Madrid side who are currently led by their Argentinian Head Coach, Diego Simeone, at the iconic Emirates Stadium located at the heart of North London. This game is taking place during the league phase of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League, with the Gunners looking for what could be a crucial victory for the club in this season’s competition.
The Gunners will have ambitions of going all the way to the final, which is set to take place in Budapest at the Puskas Arena in Hungary in May 2026. Momentum will be significant if they are to have a chance of reaching the final of this season’s competition, and victory here against Atleti would help them gain some, as well as giving a boost to their hopes of reaching the knockout stages automatically.
The North London side secured its spot in the Champions League for this season after finishing second in the Premier League last season. They had earned a grand total of 74 points overall from the 38 games that they had played throughout the campaign, only finishing behind Champions Liverpool. They were one of five clubs from England’s Premier League to qualify for this year’s tournament, alongside the Reds, as well as the likes of Manchester City, Newcastle United, and Chelsea.
They haven’t yet won the Champions League, but Arsenal came close back in the 2005/06 campaign, narrowly losing 2–1 to their fellow European heavyweights FC Barcelona. Arteta and his side will be looking to get to the final and go one better than they did back in 2006. They have still won some trophies in Europe during their illustrious history so far.
The Gunners have won 1 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and 1 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Starting with the former, this was won when they were able to beat their Italian opponents Parma 1 – 0 back in 1994, thanks to a winning goal from Alan Smith early on into the second half (20’). As for the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup win for Arsenal in 1970, this saw them beat Belgian club Anderlecht 4 – 3 on aggregate over two legs.
Moving on to Atletico Madrid, they, too, like Arsenal, are a heavyweight of European Football, having regularly participated in the Champions League in recent times. Atleti have also never won this competition, though they have come close, losing in the final both in 2014 and 2016, losing 4 – 1 and on penalties respectively – both against their fiercest rivals, Real Madrid.
The last time Arsenal and Atletico Madrid met was in the UEFA Europa League on 3rd May 2018, where the Gunners narrowly lost 1 – 0 away from home. Until now, they have never met each other in the entire history of the UEFA Champions League.
