Two-time winners Arsenal are set to enter this season’s Carabao Cup at the Third Round stage, where they have been drawn against EFL League One team and former Premier League club Bolton Wanderers. The tie is set to be played at the Emirates Stadium in North London in September.

The Gunners’ inaugural win in this competition came in 1987, where two goals from Charlie Nicholas (30’, 83’) sealed a 2 – 1 victory against Liverpool, with Ian Rush scoring the only goal for the Reds that day (23’). They were then 2 – 1 winners against Sheffield Wednesday in the 1993 Final, where Paul Merson (20’) and Stephen Morrow (68’) scored for Arsenal, whilst John Harkes scored for the Owls (8’).

Bolton have never won this tournament, but they have been runners-up on two occasions – the first time was in 1995, when they lost 2 – 1 to Liverpool, whilst they were also runners-up almost ten years in 2004 when they were defeated 2 – 1 once again, this time at the hands of Middlesbrough.

After beating League Two’s Mansfield Town in the first round, Bolton Wanderers were 2 – 0 winners against fellow third tier outfit Shrewsbury Town away from home to get to the third round, scoring through former Arsenal player Jordi Osei-Tutu (52’) and prolific forward Dion Charles (65’).

The most recent encounter between these two sides in this competition took place at the Emirates Stadium back on 25th October 2011, where it was the Gunners who won 2 – 1 thanks to goals from Andrei Arshavin (53’) and Park Chu-young (56’) – Fabrice Muamba scored the sole goal for Bolton (47’).

Overall, Arsenal and Bolton Wanderers have gone head to head in all competitions on 133 occasions in all competitions, and it is Mikel Arteta’s side who currently has the superior record of 58 victories compared with Bolton’s 39 to date. There have been 36 draws between these two teams so far over the years.

This match between the Gunners and their third tier opponents looks set to be an intriguing and entertaining contest in North London. Arsenal will be looking to take their first step towards yet another Carabao Cup title in the 2024/25 season.
