Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal and Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain are both looking for an inaugural UEFA Champions League win, and the Gunners will be looking to take one step into the Final in Munich with a victory at the Emirates Stadium against the current French Champions. The first leg of this tie will be taking place in the heart of North London on Tuesday 29th April, with the game getting underway at 8pm on that evening.
To reach the final four in this year’s Champions League Competition, Arsenal of course began their campaign in the League Phase, where they were able to finish comfortably in the top eight in third place with a total of 19 points from their 8 matches. The Gunners had been able to beat the likes of PSG (2 – 0), Shakhtar Donetsk (1 – 0), Sporting CP (5 – 1), AS Monaco (3 – 0), Dinamo Zagreb (3 – 0), and finally Girona, who they were able to beat 2 – 1 away from home.
The 2 – 0 win against their Semi Final opponents PSG saw them score at the Emirates Stadium thanks to goals from the likes of Kai Havertz (20’) and Bukayo Saka (35’), with both goals coming in the first half.
After automatically securing qualification for the knockout stages, Mikel Arteta and Arsenal were drawn against Dutch Giants PSV. In the first leg in Eindhoven, Arsenal were in ruthless form, beating their hosts at the club’s Philips Stadion, beating them 7 – 1 thanks to goals from the likes of Jurriën Timber (18’), Ethan Nwaneri (21’), Mikel Merino (31’), Martin Ødegaard (47’, 73’), Leandro Trossard (48’), and Riccardo Calafiori (85’), whilst it was Noa Lang who was the only goal scorer, doing so from the penalty spot that day (43’).
They then drew 2 – 2 in the Second Leg back in North London, with Oleksandr Zinchenko (6’) and Declan Rice (37’) scoring for Arsenal and Ivan Perišić (18’) and Couhaib Driouech (70’) scored for PSV in what was an emphatic 9 – 3 win on aggregate to Arsenal in the end.
Then came the Quarter Finals, where Arsenal arguably faced their toughest test yet in the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League, being drawn against 15 time European Champions and holders Real Madrid, with the first leg taking place at the Emirates Stadium.
This first leg tie in North London saw Arsenal put in a spectacular performance, winning 3 – 0 after beating Los Blancos thanks to two incredible free kick goals from Declan Rice (58’, 70’), whilst Mikel Merino, playing as a striker, scored the third goal of the game for the Gunners (75’).
In the second leg, which took place at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu, Arsenal were able to win 2 – 1 away from home following goals from Bukayo Saka (65’) and fellow forward Gabriel Martinelli (90+3’) to win 5 – 1 on aggregate in what was a simply superb performance from the North London outfit. VinÃcius Júnior (67’) was the sole goal scorer for Los Blancos on that day (67’).
Moving on to PSG, they finished as many as six points behind their last four opponents Arsenal in 15th place, with their victories coming against the likes of Girona (1 – 0), RB Salzburg (3 – 0), Manchester City (4 – 2), and finally German Club VFB Stuttgart away from home (4 – 1).
This saw them move on to the Knockout Phase Play-Offs, where they came up against fellow French Club Stade Brestois 29 over two legs. The first leg saw PSG beat them 3 – 0 thanks to goals from Vitinha (21’ – Penalty) and Ousmane Dembélé, who was the scorer of a brace in this game at the Stade de Roudourou (45’, 66’).
In the second leg, Paris Saint-Germain were truly emphatic 7 – 0 winners at the Parc des Princes in order to seal what was an incredible 10 – 0 victory on aggregate. The goals from the second leg in the French Capital were scored by the likes of Bradley Barcola (20’), Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (39’), Vitinha (59’), Désiré Doué (64’), Nuno Mendes (69’), Gonçalo Ramos (76’), and finally from their 18 year old midfielder Senny Mayulu (86’).
PSG then came up against Arne Slot’s Liverpool in the Round of 16, losing the first leg 1 – 0 at home thanks to a late winning goal from Harvey Elliott (87’). Then, in the second leg, Paris Saint-Germain won by the same one goal score line thanks to a crucial goal from Ousmane Dembélé early on in the first half (12’). The Parisians then went on to win 4 – 1 on penalties in the shootout, with Vitinha, Ramos, Dembélé, and Doué all scoring from the spot for PSG that night.
Unai Emery’s Aston Villa was then up next for PSG, with Luis Enrique’s side facing them over two legs, with the first taking place in the heart of the French Capital, Paris, at the Parc des Princes. It was to be a comfortable 3 – 1 victory for Paris Saint-Germain thanks to goals from Désiré Doué (39’), Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (49’), and Nuno Mendes (90+2), who all scored after PSG did initially fall behind thanks to a goal for Villa from Morgan Rogers with just over half an hour gone in the first half (35’).
PSG were beaten 3 – 2 on the night at Villa Park in Birmingham in the second leg, with the hosts scoring thanks to goals from Youri Tielemans (34’), John McGinn (55’), and Ezri Konsa (57’). PSG was able to eventually go through 5 – 4 on aggregate in B6 after scoring two early goals to take what was an initial 2 – 0 lead on the night thanks to goals from the likes of Achraf Hakimi (11’), and Nuno Mendes (27’).
