Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are going to be taking on the reigning European Champions when they face a Real Madrid outfit led by Carlo Ancelotti at the Emirates Stadium in the first leg of their 2024/25 UEFA Champions League Quarter Final tie at the home of the Gunners in what is the heart of North London. This game will be taking place on what is an 8pm kick off on Tuesday 8th April 2025.
The intense journey to the Quarter Finals for Arsenal began, of course, with the League Phase, where they were able to qualify directly for the Round of 16 thanks to a 3rd place finish with no less than a total of 19 points. They were only behind Barcelona in second place on goal difference, whilst they finished just 2 points behind top of the tree Liverpool in the end.
In the League Phase Arteta’s Arsenal had gotten the better of the likes of Paris Saint Germain (2 – 0), Shakhtar Donetsk (1 – 0), Sporting CP (1 – 5), AS Monaco (3 – 0), Dinamo Zagreb (3 – 0), and Girona (2 – 1).
Then came the Round of 16, where the Gunners would be facing Dutch Heavyweights PSV Eindhoven over two legs, with the first leg taking place at PSV’s Philips Stadion back on 4th March 2025. It was to be an emphatic and truly ruthless 7 – 1 victory away from home for Arsenal, who were able to score all of their seven goals thanks to Jurrien Timber (18’), Ethan Nwaneri (21’), Mikel Merino (31’), Martin Odegaard (47’, 73’), Leandro Trossard (48’), and Riccardo Calafiori (85’), whilst it was Dutch international forward Noa Lang who scored what was the only goal for the hosts from the penalty spot in the latter stages of the first half (43’).
Arsenal then welcomed PSV to the iconic Emirates Stadium for the second leg back on Wednesday 12th March 2025, coming into this game with what was a very commanding lead on aggregate. It was a 2 – 2 draw in the end at the Emirates, with Arsenal coming away as thoroughly deserved and ruthless 9 – 3 winners overall. In this 2 – 2 draw, the home side scored thanks to goals from Oleksandr Zinchenko (6’) and Declan Rice (37’), whilst the visitors PSV Eindhoven scored their goals through efforts from the likes of former Spurs player Ivan Perisic (18’) and their 22 year old Dutch forward Couhaib Driouech (70’).
As for Real Madrid, they failed to make it into the Round of 16 directly from the League Phase, with Los Blancos failing to finish in the top eight, in the end, thanks to an 11th place finish with a grand total of 15 points in the end.
In the League Phase itself, Carlo Ancelotti and his team were able to secure victories against the likes of Germany’s Stuttgart (3 – 1), German Giants Borussia Dortmund (5 – 2), Italy’s Atalanta (3 – 2), Austria’s RB Salzburg (5 – 1), and France’s Brest (3 – 0).
Then came the Knockout phase play-offs against reigning English Premier League Champions Manchester City. In the first leg at the Etihad Stadium, Real Madrid were able to come away as 3 – 2 winners after their goals came from the likes of Kylian Mbappe (60’), Brahim Diaz (86’), and England international midfielder Jude Bellingham (90+2’).
This of course then gave them the advantage going into the second leg at the iconic and historic Santiago Bernabéu in the heart of the Spanish Capital – Madrid. In this game, it was to be a 3 – 1 victory thanks to a spectacular hat-trick from Kylian Mbappe (4’, 33’, 61’), whilst it was 2025 January signing Nico Gonzalez in second half stoppage time (90+2’).
The draw for the Round of 16 saw Real Madrid get their fierce cross-city rivals Atletico Madrid over a two legged tie. The first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu was a 2 – 1 victory for Los Blancos following goals from the likes of Rodrygo (4’) and Brahim Diaz (55’), whilst it was former Man City forward Julian Alvarez who scored for their rivals on that night in the first half (32’).
Arsenal and Real Madrid now meet over two legs in the Quarter Finals of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League, and it will see the Gunners try to continue their quest for a maiden Champions League trophy against the reigning European Champions, who themselves have won it a record of no less than 15 times over the years to date, as of the time of writing.
These two clubs have met just once before in European Football’s Premier Club Cup Competition, and this came over two legs in the Round of 16 in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League tournament.
The first leg took place at the famous Santiago Bernabéu back on 21st February 2006, when a goal from Thierry Henry early on in the second half secured the Gunners a 1 – 0 victory and a one goal aggregate lead going into the second leg at the iconic Highbury (47’). The second leg in North London was a 0 – 0 draw to seal Arsenal’s place in the Quarter Finals that season thanks to a 1 – 0 aggregate victory against Real Madrid.
Mikel Arteta and Arsenal will be looking to replicate this iconic and historic triumph and a Carlo Ancelotti led Real Madrid.
There is no better way to watch this highly anticipated and high stakes 2024/25 UEFA Champions League Quarter Final First Leg tie between Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal and Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid at the Emirates Stadium than with an Eventmasters VIP Hospitality Package.
