Newly promoted Sheffield United will visit the Emirates Stadium to face an Arsenal team led by Head Coach Mikel Arteta. The Gunners secured a return to the Champions League with a 2nd place finish last season and three points against the Blades would help them do even better in the new season.
The 2023/24 season will be Arteta’s fourth full season as Gunners Head Coach and will look to add to the FA Cup and Community Shield that have been won during his tenure to date. The red half of North London will look to build on their 2nd place finish in the league last season.
Arsenal were prolific in front of goal last season with an incredible 88 goals – only Champions Manchester City scored more (94). The Gunners also conceded the joint second fewest amount of goals with Manchester United, with both sides conceding 43 times. Newcastle and Man City had the joint best record, with both clubs conceding just 33 times in 38 games.
Paul Heckingbottom took over at Bramall Lane when the Blades got relegated in 2021. After losing against Nottingham Forest in the 2021/22 Championship Play-Off Semi-Finals, the Blades managed to gain automatic promotion to the Premier League after finishing in 2nd place with 91 points following 28 wins in their 46 matches, scoring a total of 73 goals as a team.
The Blades’ leading goal scorer last season was Senegal international Iliman Ndiaye, who found the net 14 times over the course of the season. The forward was closely followed by fellow forward Oli McBurnie, who was able to find the back of the net on 13 occasions last term.
Only Middlesbrough and Burnley scored more than Sheffield United’s 73 goals last season, with the Blades tied with Luton Town with the two teams conceding the joint second least amount of goals with 39 each. Only Vincent Kompany’s Clarets had a better defensive record.
Including their first meeting in February 1903, the two clubs have played each other 118 times with Arsenal having the superior record of 51 wins as opposed to Sheffield United’s 40. There have been 27 draws to date.
Arsenal were emphatic 3-0 winners when the two teams last met in the Premier League. Goals from Alexandre Lacazette (33’, 85’) and Gabriel Martinelli (71’) sealed a stunning win for Arteta’s side at Bramall Lane.
This match between Arsenal and Sheffield United is set to be an intriguing match, with both clubs also looking to realise their ambitions for the 2023/24 Premier League season.
