Aston Villa are taking on Serie A side Bologna in the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League’s League Phase at Villa Park. Unai Emery’s side are targeting a spot in the Round of 16, and a victory against their Italian counterparts would most certainly bring them a step closer to realising this ambition.

It has been more than 40 years since Villa last dined at the top table of European Football. Their last participation was in 1983 as the holders, having beaten Bayern Munich 1 – 0 in the previous year’s final, where Peter Withe was the scorer of the winning goal. Juventus knocked the Villans out at the Quarter Final stage of the 1982/83 season’s tournament.

Last season Villa participated in the UEFA Europa Conference League (now known as the UEFA Conference League), beating the likes of AZ Alkmaar, Ajax, and Lille on their way to a two-legged Semi Final tie against Greek side Olympiacos. The eventual winners knocked out Emery’s side.

Now, following a stellar 2023/24 season in the Premier League, Aston Villa have the chance to take part in European Football’s Premier Club Cup competition, where they look to continue making history.

They are set to face a Bologna side who are led by their Italian Head Coach Vincenzo Italiano. Their only previous participation in the European Cup/Champions League was all the way back in the 1964/65 season. That year, they reached the Preliminary Round, where they were knocked out by Anderlecht via a coin toss after the two legs ended in a 2 – 2 draw on aggregate, and a play-off game had ended in a 0 – 0 draw as well.

In the past, Bologna have had more success in the UEFA Europa League, where in the 1998/99 edition of this cup competition, they reached the Semi-Finals after beating the likes of Sporting CP (4 – 1 on agg.), Slavia Prague (4 – 1 on agg.), Real Betis (4 – 2 on agg.), and Olympique Lyonnais (3 – 2 on agg.). The Italian outfit were eventually knocked out by Marseille, who won on away goals after the tie had ended level at 1 – 1 on aggregate over the two legs.

Aston Villa and Bologna have never met in a competitive fixture, so this will be a historic match with this being the inaugural tie to be contested between these two clubs in the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League’s League Phase.
