Villa will looking to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for next season with a top four finish, and victory here against the Seagulls would certainly significantly help their efforts to do so.
The atmosphere at Villa Park is excellent on a matchday, and this will be no different for Villa’s game against Brighton in B6. As for the game itself, it promises to be enthralling and entertaining with this highly competitive contest featuring two sides who both play some attractive football.
Brighton are also set to compete for European Football this season, making this game an even bigger one for both sides. For Villa, they will know that all three points would not only be significant for their league campaign, it would also be a statement victory against another side chasing Europe. Villa know that they will need a top four finish to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Current Aston Villa Head Coach Unai Emery has been in charge of the club from the Second City ever since he was appointed to replace Steven Gerrard back in November 2022, with the club hovering just above the relegation zone. However, he has completely changed the club’s fortunes ever since.
By the end of the 2022/23 campaign, they had successfully secured qualification for the following season’s UEFA Europa Conference League following what was a 7th place finish in the Premier League after they managed to accumulate a grand total of 61 points by the end of that season.
Then in the 2023/24 Premier League season, it got even better for Villa under Emery, as they managed to secure their place in the UEFA Champions League after finishing this particular English top flight league campaign in 4th place after securing 68 points for the season. In the Conference League, they reached the Semi Finals, where they were beaten by the eventual winners in the form of Greek Giants Olympiacos over two legs.
As for the 2024/25 season, Villa only narrowly missed out on yet another season in the UEFA Champions League for the 2025/26 campaign after finishing in sixth place on goal difference with 66 points to their name, which secures them qualification for this season’s UEFA Europa League, where they will be looking to win the title to qualify for Champions League next season. Qualification for that tournament will also be the target for their latest campaign in the Premier League.
In the UEFA Champions League last season, Villa beat the likes of Scottish Champions Celtic (4 – 2), 1982 European Cup opponents and current German Champions Bayern Munich (1 – 0), as well as their fellow German Club RB Leipzig (3 – 2).
Then in the Round of 16, they were to come up against Belgian Giants Club Brugge, who they were able to beat 6 – 1 on aggregate to set up a mouth watering Quarter Final tie against Paris Saint-Germain.
PSG narrowly won 5 – 4 over the two legs on aggregate, though Villa did win the home game in what was the second leg 3 – 2. This was thanks to goals from the likes of Youri Tielemans (34’), John McGinn (55’), and Ezri Konsa (57’), whilst it was two defenders, Achraf Hakimi (11’) and Nuno Mendes (27’) who both scored the goals for PSG that night.
Moving on to Brighton, their German Head Coach Fabian Hürzeler has been in charge ever since he took charge back on 15th June 2024 following the departure of former Head Coach Roberto De Zerbi for French Ligue 1 Club Marseille.
In his first season in charge of the club, Hürzeler guided the Seagulls to what was a creditable 8th place finish with 61 points, and as one of the clubs who were fighting for European Football. In the end, they only missed out on 7th place to Nuno Espirito Santo’s Nottingham Forest by a very narrow margin of 4 points overall in the end.
The last time that these two clubs met in a competitive fixture in all competitions was in the Premier League when Aston Villa and Brighton came face to face was back on 2nd April 2025 at the Amex Stadium on the South Coast. It was an emphatic and well deserved 3 – 0 victory for Unai Emery’s Villa thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford (51’), Marco Asensio (78’) and Donyell Malen, who scored his goal deep into second half stoppage time (90+10’).
Overall in all competitions, Aston Villa and Brighton and Hove Albion have come face to face in a competitive fixture on no less than 35 occasions, and it is Villa who currently have the superior record of 19 victories compared with the Seagulls’ record of just 6 to date, as of the time of writing. There have also been 10 draws between these two clubs as well so far.
