Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are set to come face to face with a Mauricio Pochettino led Chelsea at Villa Park in what is set to be an FA Cup Fourth Round Replay at B6. The original fixture at Stamford Bridge in West London ended as a competitive and tense 0 – 0 draw, meaning that whichever one of these two teams gets to the fifth round will have to emerge victorious in the Second City.
The winner of this replay will host either Leeds United or Plymouth Argyle in the next round.
Both clubs are serial winners of the FA Cup over the years. Meanwhile, Chelsea have won the FA Cup no less than 8 times: 1970 (2 – 1 vs. Leeds United – Replay), 1997 (2 – 0 vs. Middlesbrough), 2000 (1 – 0 vs. Aston Villa), 2007 (1 – 0 vs. Manchester United), 2009 (2 – 1 vs. Everton), 2010 (1 – 0 vs. Portsmouth), 2012 (2 – 1 vs. Liverpool) and most recently in 2018 (1 – 0 vs. Manchester United).
Interestingly, both clubs’ most recent FA Cup Final victories were against Manchester United.
To get to the fourth round, Aston Villa had to get the better of Championship club Middlesbrough. Emery’s side played Boro at the Riverside Stadium, where they would go on to emerge as 1 – 0 winners thanks to a Matty Cash goal late on in the match (87’).
Meanwhile, Chelsea had to negotiate a third round tie against another Championship side in the form of Preston North End at Stamford Bridge. It was an emphatic 4 – 0 victory for the Blues against North End, with Armando Broja (58’), Thiago Silva (66’), Raheem Sterling (69’) and Enzo Fernandez (85’) finding the back of the net that day.
Over the years, Aston Villa and Chelsea have played against each other a total of 10 times in the FA Cup. It Villa with the superior record of 5 wins compared to the Blues’ 3 – there have been 2 draws in all, including the match at the Bridge on 26th January 2024.
