Aston Villa, under the stewardship of Unai Emery, now find themselves in the Round of 16 of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League following an excellent European Campaign to date that saw them finish within the highly coveted top eight in the League Phase to gain immediate qualification for this round.
Villa are set to go toe to toe with Belgian side Club Brugge over the two legs, with the second leg of this tie set to take place at Villa Park on Wednesday 12th March. This will be the second time that these two clubs have met in this season’s competition, with the Villans having unfortunately been narrowly beaten by Brugge away from home, losing 1 – 0.
Brugge were of course not the only team that Aston Villa faced from across Europe in the League Phase – the loss in Belgium was actually one of only two that the Villans have suffered in this season’s competition to date. Villa opened their campaign with an emphatic 3 – 0 victory away from home against Swiss outfit BSC Young Boys thanks to goals from Youri Tielemans (27’), Jacob Ramsey (38’), and Amadou Onana (86’).
Villa then followed this up by echoing the 1982 European Cup triumph by then beating German Giants Bayern Munich at Villa Park, beating them 1 – 0 once again. This time it was Jhon Duran who scored a famous winning goal for the team in Claret and Blue, finding the back of the net late on into the game (79’).
Bologna came next, and this was a more comfortable 2 – 0 win for Villa, winning thanks to goals from John McGinn (55’) and Jhon Duran (64’). Then came the narrow 1 – 0 defeat to Club Brugge, and then that controversial 0 – 0 draw against Italian Heavyweights Juventus at Villa Park where a goal that would have been the winner from Morgan Rogers was ruled out by VAR.
Then came a tremendous win in Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena, where Emery and Aston Villa were able to come away from this game as 3 – 2 winners following goals from John McGinn (3’), Jhon Duran (52’), and Ross Barkley (85’). It was Lois Openda (27’) and Christoph Baumgartner (62’).
Villa was then defeated 1 – 0 by French Club AS Monaco in the penultimate League Phase game before a 4 – 2 triumph over Scottish Giants Celtic sealed their place in the Round of 16 in the final game of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League’s League Phase at Villa Park. Villa scored through a Morgan Rogers hat-trick (3’, 5’, & 90+1’) and a goal from Ollie Watkins (60’). Meanwhile, visitors Celtic got their two goals through striker Adam Idah, with both strikes coming in the first half (36’, 38’).
As for Club Brugge, they beat Sturm Graz 1 – 0, Aston Villa 1 – 0, and Portuguese Giants Sporting CP 2 – 1 in the 2024/25 League Phase, securing their place in the Knockout Play-Offs, where they were able to beat Italian Serie A outfit Atalanta comfortably, beating La Dea 5 – 2 on aggregate over the two legs.
There is no better way to watch this highly anticipated and high stakes 2024/25 UEFA Champions League Round of 16 Second Leg tie between Unai Emery’s Aston Villa and Nicky Hayen’s Club Brugge at Villa Park with an Eventmasters VIP Hospitality Package.
