Unai Emery and his Aston Villa side will welcome European and Italian Heavyweights Juventus to Villa Park for their UEFA Champions League phase tie in B6. A victory here would not only be a statement, but it would also see the Villa get three points closer to realise their ambition of reaching the Round of 16 in this season’s competition.

This will also be an opportunity for Aston Villa to get some revenge on The Old Lady. Back in 1983, Juventus were the club to knock the Villa out of the European Cup at the Quarter Final stage as holders. Juve were able to knock out their English counterparts 5 – 2 on aggregate for that two-legged tie.

Like Juventus, Aston Villa has also experienced what it is like to win this competition, having done so when the Champions League was known as the European Cup all the way back in 1982. On the day, that famous Peter Withe goal midway through the second half (67’) proved to be the difference as Villa ran out as 1 – 0 winners against the mighty Bayern Munich at the De Kuip Stadium in Rotterdam.

As for their Italian counterparts, they have got their hands on the trophy twice. Their first came in the 1984/85 season when they ran out as 1 – 0 winners thanks to a goal from Michel Platini, who scored from the penalty spot early on in the second half (58’).

Their second and most recent triumph in this competition came years later in the 1995/96 season, when they beat Ajax 4 – 2 on penalties after the game had ended at 1 – 1 after extra time. Goals from Fabrizio Ravanelli (12’) and Jari Litmanen (41’) for their respective sides that day made the difference.

1983 was the last time that these sides played against each other, with this fixture in the 2024/25 season being just the third time that the Villans and the Old Lady have met in a competitive fixture to date.

Villa were of course in Europe last season, taking part in the 2023/24 UEFA Europa Conference League (now the UEFA Conference League). Unai Emery’s side were able to beat the likes of AZ Alkmaar, Ajax, and LOSC Lille on their way to a semi-final which they went on to lose on aggregate throughout the two legs against eventual winners, Greece’s Olympiacos.
