Unai Emery’s Aston Villa is going to welcome Graham Potter and his West Ham United side to the iconic and historic Villa Park in the heart of Birmingham during the 2025/26 Premier League season. Every victory will be crucial for the Villans, and a win against their East London counterparts would give them a boost in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification.
The atmosphere at Villa Park is expected to be electric as it so often is, and this will be no different when the Hammers visit B6. This game is also set to be highly competitive and enthralling with both sides expected to be occupying positions in the top half of the table throughout this season.
Unai Emery succeeded Steven Gerrard as Head Coach at Aston Villa, with his appointment being announced back in October 2022, before he officially began his tenure at the West Midlands club a month later in November of that year. By the end of the 2022/23 season, the Villans were now in 7th place, securing themselves European Football via the UEFA Conference League for the following season.
Then came the Spaniard’s first full campaign in charge of the club (2023/24), and it saw the Villa have an incredible season that saw them perform beyond pre-season expectations to finish as high as fourth place after they had been able to earn as many as 68 points from their 38 matches to earn themselves a highly coveted place in the UEFA Champions League.
In the Conference League, they managed to advance to the Semi Finals, where they were unfortunately knocked out of the competition by the Greek heavyweights Olympiacos who went on to beat Italian Serie A side Fiorentina 1 – 0 in Athens to become the first club from Greece to win a European trophy.
Last season, Villa were challenging for qualification for the UEFA Champions League once again in the Premier League, but they fell short after missing out on goal difference alone in 6th place with a total of 66 points from their 38 games. They did at least secure themselves a place in the prestigious UEFA Europa League for the 2025/26 campaign.
In the Champions League, they beat the likes of Bayern Munich (1 – 0), Bologna (2 – 0), RB Leipzig (3 – 2), and Celtic (4 – 2) in the league phase before beating Belgian Giants Club Brugge 6 – 1 on aggregate over two legs after winning 3 – 1 away from home and 3 – 0 in the second leg at Villa Park.
Then came a Quarter Final tie against PSG, who went on to win the 2025 UEFA Champions League Final by beating Inter Milan 5 – 0. Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint Germain were 5 – 4 winners on aggregate whilst they were beaten 3 – 2 by Villa at Villa Park in the second leg. Youri Tielemans (34’), John McGinn (55’), and Ezri Konsa (57’) all scored for the hosts that night, whilst it was both of PSG’s wing backs who scored, with the visiting Parisians scoring thanks to goals from the likes of Achraf Hakimi (11’) and Nuno Mendes (27’).
Moving on to West Ham United, they have had Graham Potter in charge as Head Coach since his appointment back on 9th January 2025, replacing his predecessor Julen Lopetegui. By the end of the 2024/25 Premier League season, the Hammers ended up with what was a 14th place finish with 43 points having been earned from their 38 games overall.
They last met at Villa Park in what was a 1 – 1 draw in the Premier League on 26th January 2025, where Jacob Ramsey (8’) and Emerson (70’) scored the goals for their respective teams. Villa also beat West Ham 2 – 1 in the FA Cup and the opening game of last season as well.
Overall, Aston Villa and West Ham United have come face to face in a competitive game in all competitions on a grand total of 123 occasions, and it is the Hammers who have the marginally better record of 45 victories compared with the Villans’ total of 41 as of the time of writing, whilst there have been 37 draws between them so far in years gone by.
