Unai Emery’s Aston Villa will once again be going head-to-head with Graham Potter’s West Ham United at Villa Park in the 2024/25 Premier League season. Villa will be looking for all three points as they look to edge themselves closer to securing UEFA Champions League Football and a top-four finish in England’s top flight for the second successive season.

It was a defeat at the hands of Marco Silva’s Fulham at Craven Cottage in West London that saw previous Villa Boss Steven Gerrard dismissed in October 2022. It was on 24th October that Unai Emery was selected as his replacement in the Aston Villa managerial hot seat, and in his first half-season in charge, the Spaniard managed to lead his new club to a 7th place finish, to successfully qualify for the following season’s UEFA Europa Conference League.

In the 2023/24 UEFA Europa Conference League, they managed to defeat the likes of Legia Warsaw, AZ Alkmaar (Twice), Ajax, and Lille on their way to a semi-final tie against eventual winners Olympiacos, who knocked Aston Villa out of the competition over two legs at the semi-final stage. In the league itself, Villa secured a place in the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League with 68 points in 4th place – just 2 ahead of Spurs, who ended up finishing in 5th place.

Moving on to West Ham United, following the dismissal of his predecessor Julen Lopetegui, Graham Potter was unveiled as the Spaniard’s successor at the London Stadium back on Thursday 9th January 2025. Potter’s successful managerial career began with Swedish Club Ostersund, who he led to three promotions and to the Round of 32 of the UEFA Europa League in the 2017/18 season. He then had further success at Swansea City (2018 – 2019) and Brighton (2019 – 2022), with his most recent managerial role being with Chelsea from 2022 to 2023, before joining West Ham in 2025.

Last season, the Hammers secured a 9th place finish after earning a total of 52 points from their 38 matches in the 2023/24 campaign.

These two clubs have met in a competitive fixture 122 times over the years to date, and the Hammers have the most wins, 45 in all, compared to the Villans’ 41. As of the time of writing, there have been 36 draws between these two.
