Arsenal will welcome fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace, led by Oliver Glasner, to the Emirates Stadium in the Quarter Finals of this season’s Carabao Cup. This tie will be played in North London in December 2024.
To get to this point, Mikel Arteta’s Gunners side have had to navigate ties against League One outfit Bolton Wanderers in Round Three before taking on EFL Championship outfit Preston North End in the Round of 16 in their most recent game in this season’s competition.
Arsenal’s Third Round encounter with Bolton saw the Gunners come away with an emphatic 5 – 1 win at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday 25th September, with Declan Rice (16’), Ethan Nwaneri (37’, 49’), Raheem Sterling (64’), and Kai Havertz (77’) all finding the back of the Bolton net. The visitors did score a goal themselves early on in the second half thanks to Aaron Collins (53’).
In their trip to Lancashire, Arteta’s Arsenal took on Preston North End at Deepdale in the Round of 16, which turned out to be a comfortable 3 – 0 success for the North London outfit. On target in the match for the Gunners were Gabriel Jesus (24’), Ethan Nwaneri (33’), and Kai Havertz (57’), with two of these players having scored in the previous round of this competition as well.
Arsenal have won the League Cup on two occasions, doing so in 1986/87, and most recently in the 1992/93 season when they were able to beat Sheffield Wednesday 2 – 1 at the old Wembley, with Paul Merson (20’) and Stephen Morrow (68’) scoring for the Gunners. As for the Owls, John Harkes (8’) gave them the initial lead early on in what turned out to be their only goal of the game.
Moving on to Crystal Palace, their journey to the tie against the Gunners in the 2024/25 Carabao Cup Quarter Final saw them go toe to toe with fellow London Club QPR, of the EFL Championship away from home. It was a 2 – 1 win for the Eagles, scoring thanks to summer signing Eddie Nketiah (16’) and Eberechi Eze (64’). Sam Field was the sole goal scorer for the hosts in that game (53’).
Fellow Premier League outfit Aston Villa was their most recent opponent in the Carabao Cup, facing them in their Round of 16 tie against the Villans at Villa Park on Wednesday 30th October. It was a 2 – 1 win for the travelling Eagles side following goals from Eberechi Eze (8’) and Daichi Kamada (64’). Jhon Duran was the scorer of the only goal on that night for Unai Emery’s Aston Villa (23’).
Palace have never won the League Cup in their history so far. However, the furthest that they have reached is the Semi Final, which they have done on two occasions, in the 2000/01 season, where they lost to Liverpool, and in the 2011/12 season, when they were beaten by Cardiff City.
The most recent competitive encounter between Arsenal and Crystal Palace in all competitions took place back on 20th January 2024 in the Premier League, with the Gunners securing an emphatic 5 – 0 triumph at the Emirates Stadium, with Gabriel (11’, 37’), Leandro Trossard (59’), and Gabriel Martinelli (90+4’, 90+5’) all finding the back of the net on that day.
Overall, these London clubs have met on 55 occasions to date, and it is Arsenal who has the superior record of 33 victories compared with Crystal Palace’s record of 6 so far. There have been 16 draws between the teams as of the time of writing.
This match promises to be entertaining and enthralling, together with an amazing atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium for what is a crucial fixture for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal and their opponents Crystal Palace. Both clubs will be competing as they go toe to toe to take a step closer to the Final at the famous Wembley Stadium, and to lifting that famous trophy.
