Arsenal and Newcastle United meet at Emirates for this first leg of the EFL Carabao Cup Semi Final
Arsenal, led by their Head Coach Mikel Arteta, are going to be going head to head with Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium in North London in February 2025. This will be the first leg of what promises to be an enthralling, tense, and highly competitive tie.
The Gunners faced fellow London Club Crystal Palace, led by their Austrian Head Coach Oliver Glasner, in the most recent round – the Quarter Final. It was an entertaining and exciting game that ended in a 3 – 2 win for Arteta’s Arsenal, who scored all three goals through a sensational hat-trick from their Brazilian international striker Gabriel Jesus in the second half (54’, 73’, 81’). The Eagles had initially taken the lead through Jean-Philippe Mateta (4’), and they did manage to pull a goal back late on in the second half, just after Jesus’ third goal, and it was through former Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah (85’).
This tie followed victories in the Third Round and the Round of 16. In the Third Round, Arsenal was able to beat League One Club Bolton Wanderers emphatically, defeating their third tier opponents 5 – 1, thanks to goals from Declan Rice (16’), Ethan Nwaneri (37’, 49’), Raheem Sterling (64’), and Kai Havertz (77’). Bolton did however manage to score thanks to their forward Aaron Collins early on in the second half (53’).
Then in the Round of 16, the Gunners came up against Championship outfit Preston North End at Deepdale, where they were very comfortable winners once again, triumphing 3 – 0 away from home against their second tier opponents. Gabriel Jesus (24’), Ethan Nwaneri (33’), and Kai Havertz (57’) were all on target for the away side in this game.
Arsenal have won this competition on two occasions, doing so for the first time in the 1986/87 season, when two goals from Charlie Nicolas either side of half time (30’, 83’) were enough for a 2 – 1 win against Liverpool at Wembley, whilst it was the legendary Ian Rush who scored the only goal for the Reds on that day (23’).
The second final win, their most recent triumph in this historic tournament, came back in the 1992/93 season when a Gunners outfit led by their then Manager George Graham against Sheffield Wednesday. Paul Merson (20’) and Steve Morrow (68’) were the goal scorers for the Gunners that day, whilst it was John Harkes who scored for the Owls at the iconic Wembley Stadium (8’).
Moving on to Newcastle United, they have never won the Carabao Cup – the furthest stage of this competition that they have reached is the Final, which they have done on two occasions. They first did so in the 1975/76 season when they suffered a 2 – 1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City, where their only goal came from Alan Gowling in the first half (35’), whilst it was Peter Barnes (11’) and Denis Tueart (46’) who both scored the goals for the Cityzens that day.
Then came their most recent Carabao Cup Final defeat in the 2022/23 season, when they were defeated 2 – 0 by Manchester United at the iconic Wembley Stadium. Casemiro (33’) and Marcus Rashford (39’) were both the goal scorers for the Red Devils that day.
The most recent competitive fixture to be played between these two clubs at the Emirates Stadium was played back on 24th February 2024, when the Gunners were able to come away as truly emphatic 4 – 1 winners against their Tyneside rivals. Goals that day for the North London Club came thanks to Kai Havertz (24’), Bukayo Saka (65’), Jakub Kiwior (69’), and an own goal from Magpies defender Sven Botman early on in the first half (18’).
Overall, these two Premier League clubs have met in competitive fixtures on a grand total of 194 occasions, and it is Arsenal who has the superior record of 85 victories, compared with a total of 70 for Newcastle United so far, as of the time of writing. To date, there have been 39 draws between the Gunners and the Magpies overall.
The first leg of this highly anticipated 2024/25 Carabao Cup Semi Final tie at the iconic Emirates Stadium will see what promises to be an enthralling and intense game played out on the pitch, with there also being an incredible atmosphere to boot. Both Arsenal and Newcastle will of course want to strengthen their own chances of adding more silverware to their respective trophy cabinets.
