Spurs and Liverpool meet in this semi-final of the EFL Carabao Cup with hopes of reaching Wembley for the 2024/25 EFL Carabao Cup Final

Spurs and Liverpool are going toe to toe in the first leg of their 2024/25 Carabao Cup Semi Final tie at the iconic Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in January 2025. Both Tottenham and the Reds are no strangers to winning this historic competition that has history stretching back to its establishment back in the 1960/61 season.

To reach this stage of the competition, Tottenham had to negotiate their way past Ruben Amorim and his Manchester United side in North London in the Quarter Final in what was a seven goal thriller, where Spurs won 4 – 3. The goals for Ange Postecoglou’s side came from Dominic Solanke (15’ & 54’), Dejan Kulusevski (46’) & Son Heung-Min (88’), whilst United found the back of the net on the night thanks to Joshua Zirkzee (63’), Amad Diallo (70’), and Jonny Evans.

For Spurs, this followed wins in previous rounds against opponents from various levels of the English Football pyramid. They had beaten the likes of Coventry City (Third Round, 2 – 1) and Manchester City (Round of 16, 2 – 1) ahead of their Quarter Final game against the Red Devils, which of course they went on to win.

As for Arne Slot and his Liverpool team, they went head to head with Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium on the South Coast in the Quarter Final, which they were able to win 2 – 1 following goals from Darwin Nunez (24’) and Harvey Elliott (32’), whilst it was Cameron Archer (59’) got the only goal of the game for the Saints on the night.

In previous rounds, the Reds had got their way past fellow Premier League outfit West Ham United in the Third Round, beating the Hammers emphatically 5 – 1, before going on to get the better of another top flight club in the form of Brighton at the Amex Stadium in the Round of 16, with the Seagulls being beaten 3 – 2 before Slot’s side went on to triumph in the Quarter Final.

Spurs have won the Carabao Cup on four occasions as of the time of writing, having done so in the 1970/71, 1972/73, 1998/99 and 2007/08 seasons. In their most recent final appearance, goals from Dimitar Berbatov (70’ – Penalty) and Jonathan Woodgate (94’) secured a 2 – 1 win after extra time, with Didier Drogba scoring the sole goal for the Blues on that occasion. Tottenham will be looking to take a significant step closer to reaching the 2024/25 Final with a win against Liverpool.

As for Liverpool, they have won this historic and prestigious competition on 10 occasions, which is the most of any club to date. These wins came in 1980/81, 1981/82, 1982/83, 1983/84, 1994/95, 2000/01, 2002/03, 2011/12, 2021/22, and most recently last season in the 2023/24 Final, when they were 1 – 0 winners after extra time against Chelsea, beating them thanks to a last gasp winning goal from Virgil Van Dijk (118’).

The last time that these two clubs met in a competitive game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London was in a Premier League game back on 30th September 2023. A goal from Son Heung-Min (36’) and an own goal from Joel Matip (90+6’) earned them an extraordinary and thrilling 2 – 1 win against the Reds.

Overall, Tottenham and Liverpool have gone head to head in a competitive fixture in all competitions on a total of no less than 183 occasions, and it is the Reds who have the superior record of 90 wins in this fixture, compared with 49 in total for Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs and the Reds have taken part in 44 draws overall, to date.
