Manchester United welcome Bayern Munich to Old Trafford for this 2023/24 Champions League match.
Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United are set to welcome German Champions Bayern Munich to Old Trafford, which will see two European heavyweights battle for victory, with both sides seen as possible champions of Europe this season. The match will take place on Tuesday, 12th December 2023, in an 8pm kick-off.
Both clubs are serial winners of the UEFA Champions League. The Red Devils have won the competition on three occasions to date, in 1967/68 (4-1 vs. Benfica), 1998/99 (2-1 vs. Bayern Munich) and 2007/08 (6-5 on penalties vs. Chelsea).
Who could forget the iconic Champions League Final between these two clubs at Camp Nou in 1999? It was a tight occasion, and it looked not to be United’s day when the game entered its final stages with no reply to Bayern’s opening goal, which had been scored by Mario Basler (6’). Sir Alex Ferguson’s side went on to complete the most dramatic of comebacks, winning the final 2-1 after two stoppage-time goals, which were scored by Teddy Sheringham (90+1’) and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (90+3’).
The Bavarians have won the Champions League on six occasions to date, in 1973/74 (4 – 0 vs. Atletico Madrid), 1974/75 (2-0 vs. Leeds United), 1975/76 (1-0 vs. Saint-Etienne), 2000/01 (5-4 on penalties vs. Valencia), 2012/13 (2-1 vs. Borussia Dortmund) and 2019/20 (1-0 vs. Paris Saint-Germain).
Last season, Manchester United finished in 3rd place after accumulating 75 points. There was also silverware for Erik Ten Hag’s Red Devils in 2022/23, beating Newcastle United 2-0 in the 2023 Carabao Cup Final at Wembley Stadium thanks to goals from Casemiro (33’) and Marcus Rashford (39’).
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich managed to win their 11th Bundesliga title in a row after accumulating 71 points – they won it on goal difference ahead of rivals Borussia Dortmund.
Manchester United and Bayern Munich have played against each other 16 times in this competition, and the Red Devils have the superior record of 4 wins compared to the Bavarians’ 2. There have been five draws between these two massive clubs as of the time of writing.
Marcus Rashford scored the most goals for Manchester United in all competitions last term with 30. As for Bayern Munich, their leading goal scorer in all competitions in the 2022/23 season was Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Serge Gnabry, who got 17 goals each.
There are a number of players who have represented both Manchester United and Bayern Munich. Five examples are: Marcel Sabitzer (Bayern Munich: 2021 – 2023, Manchester United: 2023 – loan), Daley Blind (Manchester United: 2014 – 2018, Bayern Munich: 2023), Bastien Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich: 2002 – 2015, Manchester United: 2015 – 2017), Mark Hughes (Manchester United: 1980 – 1986 & 1988 – 1995, Bayern Munich: 1987 – 1988 – loan) and Owen Hargreaves (Bayern Munich: 2000 – 2007, Manchester United: 2007 – 2011).
