This season sees Chelsea take part in this competition for the first time in the club’s illustrious history, but they have, of course, enjoyed extensive success in European Football in the past. They are two-time UEFA Champions League winners (2011/12 & 2020/21), two-time UEFA Europa League winners (2012/13 & 2018/19), two-time UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup winners (1970/71 & 1997/98), and two-time UEFA Super Cup winners (1998 & 2021).
Chelsea’s most recent European triumph came in 2021, when they won the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup. In the former competition’s final they beat Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 1 – 0 at the Estadio do Drago in Porto, Portugal. Kai Havertz scored the winning goal in the latter stages of the second half (42’).
As for the 2021 UEFA Super Cup, they were victorious over Spanish Side Villarreal, who they beat 6 – 5 on penalties after goals from Hakim Ziyech (27’) and Gerard Moreno for their respective teams.
Gent has never won a European Competition. The furthest they reached in the UEFA Conference League was the Quarter-Finals in the 2022/23 season, where they were beaten 5 – 2 on aggregate by eventual winners West Ham.
This will be the first-ever competitive clash between Chelsea and Gent, and some history is set to be made at Stamford Bridge.
