Chelsea, led by Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino, are set to welcome a Leicester City side led by Enzo Maresca to Stamford Bridge for their 2023/24 FA Cup Quarter Final tie. In the fifth round, the Blues were 3 – 2 winners against Leeds United in a competitive game.
Leeds took an early lead through young forward Mateo Joseph (8’) before parity arrived thanks to an equaliser from Nicolas Jackson shortly after that (15’). Chelsea then took the lead for the first time in the tie when Ukrainian forward Mykhailo Mudryk found the back of the net to make it 2 – 1 in the latter stages of the first half (37’). Leeds’ Joseph levelled it at 2 – 2 early in the second half (59’) before Conor Gallagher scored a late winning goal (90’) to send Chelsea into the next round.
As for Leicester, the Foxes went face to face with Andoni Iraola’s AFC Bournemouth in the fifth round. This game was tighter and just as tense, with Maresca’s side coming away with a 1 – 0 win following a goal from forward Abdul Fatawu early on in extra time (105’).
The Quarter Final winner will not only be a semi-final place, but it will also see them secure an opportunity to play at the iconic Wembley Stadium in the next round.
Both clubs have tasted success in the FA Cup in the past. Chelsea has won this competition no less than 8 times, whilst opponents Leicester have won this illustrious trophy on one occasion, but they have made the final a total of 5 times, including their win in 2021.
Starting with the Blues, their FA Cup Final victories have come in 1970 (2 – 1 vs. Leeds United – Replay), 1997 (2 – 0 vs. Middlesbrough), 2000 (1 – 0 vs. Aston Villa), 2007 (1 – 0 vs. Manchester United), 2009 (2 – 1 vs. Everton), 2010 (1 – 0 vs. Portsmouth), 2012 (2 – 1 vs. Liverpool) and most recently in 2018, when they were 1 – 0 winners once more against Manchester United thanks to an Eden Hazard penalty kick in the early stages of the first half (22’).
Moving on to the Foxes, their inaugural, and so far only, FA Cup title arrived in the 2021 Final, where they did face Chelsea at Wembley. It was a wonderful finish and goal from Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans that won them the trophy in the 2021/22 final (63’). Their four other final appearances have been in 1949 (3 – 1 vs. Wolves), 1961 (2 – 0 vs. Tottenham), 1963 (3 – 1 vs. Manchester United) and in 1969 (1 – 0 vs. Manchester City).
Chelsea had to face a number of teams from various levels of the football pyramid to reach this quarter-final tie against Leicester. Facing Championship club Preston North End in the third round, they were very comfortable 4 – 0 winners against the Lilywhites thanks to goals at Stamford Bridge from Armando Broja (58’), Thiago Silva (66’), Raheem Sterling (69’) and Argentine central midfielder Enzo Fernandez in the late stages in the second half (85’).
Following a 0 – 0 draw at Stamford Bridge, Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues were 3 – 1 winners against fellow Premier League club Aston Villa in the fourth round at Villa Park. Conor Gallagher (11’), Nicolas Jackson (21’) and Enzo Fernandez (54’) were their goal scorers that day. French forward Moussa Diaby scored the only goal for Unai Emery’s hosts (90+1’).
The aforementioned 3 – 2 win in the fifth round at Stamford Bridge against Championship Club Leeds United then came to then book the Blues’ spot in the 2023/24 FA Cup Semi-Final.
As for Enzo Maresca’s Leicester City, goals from Cesare Casadei (16’), Ricardo Pereira (39’) and Tom Cannon (61’) secured them a 3 – 2 third round win against fellow Championship side Millwall at The Den. The Lions’ two goals came thanks to Duncan Watmore (56’) and Zian Flemming (86’).
This secured the Foxes a fourth round tie against fellow Midlands and Championship club Birmingham City at the King Power Stadium. In the end, it was to be a comfortable 3 – 0 win for Leicester, who scored their goals through Jamie Vardy (47’), Yunus Akgün (72’) and midfielder Dennis Praet (88’).
Then came their aforementioned 1 – 0 win against Andoni Iraola’s AFC Bournemouth in the fifth round at the Cherries’ Vitality Stadium on the South Coast in late February 2024.
Over the years, Chelsea and Leicester City have met a total of 10 times in the 153-year history of the FA Cup. The Blues have won on 7 occasions, with 2 draws and the only defeat against the Foxes coming in the 2021 FA Cup Final.
