This crucial contest is set to be played at Villa Park on Thursday 2nd May 2024 in what is set to be a 8pm kick-off in the Second City. The winner of this tense tie will be facing either Fiorentina or Club Brugge in the Final in Athens.
After beating Hibernian 8 – 0 on aggregate in the playoffs, Villa made it to the Group Stages, where they would go on to face Poland’s Legia Warsaw, the Netherlands’ AZ Alkmaar and Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Zrinjski Mostar. In Group E, Villa began their European campaign against Polish side Legia Warsaw, which saw them beaten 3 – 2, however, they would then open their European account with a 1 – 0 win against Zrinjski Mostar at Villa Park.
An emphatic 4 – 1 win away from home against Eredivisie heavyweights AZ Alkmaar made it 2 wins in three before another win was secured in the next game against the Dutch side at Villa Park with Emery’s side winning 2 – 1. Villa secured qualification for the Round of 16 and were crowned as winners of Group E after a 2 – 1 victory at home to Legia Warsaw and a 1 – 1 draw away from home against Zrinjski Mostar.
European heavyweights Ajax were drawn against the Villans in the Round of 16, with the first leg of this round being played at the Johan Cruyff Arena in the Dutch Capital City of Amsterdam. Following a 0 – 0 draw in the first leg, Aston Villa were emphatic 4 – 0 winners in the second leg of this tie in Birmingham, scoring through Ollie Watkins (25’), Leon Bailey (60’) Jhon Duran (75’) and Moussa Diaby (81’). This saw the Villans drawn against Ligue 1 side Lille in the Quarter Finals.
Aston Villa were able to win the first leg against their French counterparts 2 – 1 thanks to goals from Ollie Watkins (13’) and John McGinn (56’). Bafode Diakite got the visitors’ only goal of the night in B6 very late on in the contest (84’). Lille did win the second leg 2 – 1 themselves, with Villa saving themselves with a late goal from Matty Cash (87’).
Unai Emery’s Villans managed to go on to win this Quarter Final tie thanks to a 4 – 3 win on penalties, with 2022 World Cup winning Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saving two Lille spot kicks in the process.
Olympiacos, after beating Turkish outfit Fenerbahce 3 – 2 in their own penalty shootout, are going to be Villa’s opponents in their two legged 2023/24 UEFA Europa Conference League Semi-Final tie.
Neither club has ever won this competition, but after victory in the Quarter Finals, Villa are amongst the sides that have taken a step closer to a European Final in Athens later in May. This will be the first-ever competitive fixture played between Aston Villa and Olympiacos, with neither side having met the other in the past.
