Aston Villa are set to go head-to-head with Legia Warszawa at Villa Park in the third round of the Europa Conference League.
Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are set to welcome Polish side Legia Warsaw to Villa Park in the 2023/24 UEFA Europa Conference League Group Stages. This match is set to take place on Thursday, 30th November 2023 in an 8pm kick-off.
In terms of European football, the Villans have plenty of pedigree. They won the European Cup (now the UEFA Champions League) in 1982, beating German giants Bayern Munich 1-0 at De Kuip in Rotterdam thanks to a Peter Withe goal (67’). They followed this up with a 3-1 win against FC Barcelona on aggregate to win the 1982 European Super Cup. Villa also won the now defunct Intertoto Cup in 2001.
Last season, Aston Villa finished 7th in the Premier League after accumulating 61 points from their 38 matches. Qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League was secured following a 2-1 victory at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on the final day of the campaign. After beating Scottish side Hibernian 8-0 on aggregate in the Play-Off qualifying round, Emery’s Villans secured their spot in the Group Stages.
It was quite the recovery from Villa to secure Europe and a 7th place finish. They had gotten their season off to a bad start before the campaign was turned around following the appointment of former Arsenal, PSG and Villarreal Head Coach Unai Emery, who succeeded Steven Gerrard in October 2022.
As for Legia Warsaw, they had an excellent season in the Ekstraklasa (Poland’s Top Flight), securing a second-place finish after accumulating 66 points. They were 9 points adrift of Champions Raków Częstochowa. This finish saw them secure a spot in the UEFA Europa Conference League. They did get the better of Raków Częstochowa in the Polish Cup Final, beating them 6-5 on penalties in the final.
To make it to the group stages, Legia Warsaw had to make it through 3 qualifying rounds. In the Second Qualifying Round, they got the better of FC Ordabasy from Kazakhstan, beating them 5-4 on aggregate. Then it was Austrian side Austria Wien who stood in their way in the Third Qualifying Round, where Legia emerged as 6-5 winners on aggregate following the two legs.
Danish Giants Midtjylland were Legia Warsaw’s opponents in the play-off round, the final qualifying round standing in their way of a spot in the group stages. After drawing 4-4 on aggregate, Legia won 6-5 on penalties.
With 16 goals in all competitions, Ollie Watkins was Aston Villa’s leading goal scorer in all competitions last season. As for Legia Warsaw, their top scorer last season was Josué with 15 goals in all competitions.
This will be the first time Aston Villa and Legia Warsaw have met in a European Competition.
There is one player who has represented both teams, Dariusz Kubicki. The right-back played for Legia Warsaw from 1983 until 1992, when he joined Aston Villa. Kubicki spent two years in B6 before moving to Sunderland in 1994.
