Everton and Arsenal have been in the Premier League since its inaugural season more than 30 years ago, and they will be coming face to face at Goodison Park in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Sean Dyche’s Toffees will look to climb the table whilst also surviving relegation by a more comfortable margin this time. Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta’s Gunners will look to challenge for the league title once more and go one better than last season, when they lost out to Manchester City.
Following the dismissal of Frank Lampard in January 2023, Everton announced former Watford and Burnley Manager Sean Dyche as his permanent successor just a few days later. At the time of Dyche’s appointment, the club sat in a difficult position in 19th place with 15 points, but they were still only 2 points from safety with the best goal difference out of the bottom four teams.
There was an improvement in fortunes after Sean Dyche joined the club, with some memorable wins. The first was an emphatic 5 – 1 win away from home against Brighton where Abdoulaye Doucouré (1’, 29’), Dwight McNeil (76’, 90+6’) and an own goal from Jason Steele (35’) ensured what was a very significant win for the Blue side of Merseyside.
Another crucial win was, of course, the 1 – 0 win against Bournemouth at Goodison Park on the final day of the 2022/23 Premier League season when a fabulous finish from Doucouré in the second half (57’) ensured that the Dyche’s Toffees would avoid relegation and a first season in the second tier since the 1953/54 season, finishing in 17th place.
Dwight McNeil was the top scorer in the Premier League for Everton last season with seven goals, with Abdoulaye Doucouré a close second with five goals. Demarai Gray came third with four goals.
Mikel Arteta permanently succeeded Unai Emery at Arsenal on 20th December 2019. By the end of his first season (2019/20), the Gunners finished in 8th place, where they finished again in the season after that (2020/21).
There was a significant improvement in the fortunes of Arteta’s Arsenal in the 2021/22 Premier League season, finishing in 5th place with 69 points which saw them seal a spot in the Europa League for the following season. Last season (2022/23), they led the way at the summit of the Premier League table before eventually losing out to Manchester City by a margin of 5 points.
During his time at the club, Mikel Arteta has led the club to silverware: 1 FA Cup (2 – 1 vs Chelsea, 2019/20) & 1 FA Community Shield (5-4 win on penalties vs Liverpool, 2020).
Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Ødegaard were Arsenal’s joint top league goal scorers last season, scoring 15 goals each for the Gunners. Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus were close behind with 14 and 11 goals in the Premier League, respectively.
Everton and Arsenal went head to head competitively for the first time in a league fixture at Goodison Park on 5th April 1905, which the Toffees won 1-0 thanks to a goal coming from forward Alex Young. The Gunners have won 110 of 221 meetings compared to the Toffees’ 65. There have been 46 draws between these two clubs to date.
The most recent match between these two teams occurred in the Premier League on 1st March 2023, where Everton lost 4 – 0 at the Emirates Stadium. The Toffees beat Arsenal 1-0 in Sean Dyche’s first game in charge on 4th February 2023. James Tarkowski got the goal in the second half with half an hour remaining (60’).
