Everton and newly promoted Sheffield United will meet at Goodison Park in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Paul Heckingbottom’s Blades will look to avoid an instant return to the Championship, whereas Sean Dyche and his Toffees side will look to make it 70 years since the last time that they played in the second tier.
Frank Lampard was Everton’s Head Coach from his appointment in January 2022. He guided the club to safety, finishing 16th with 39 points – 4 clear of the drop. The Toffees secured their Premier League status with one game to spare after a spectacular comeback led to a 3-2 victory against Crystal Palace at Goodison.
However, following a disappointing start to the 2022/23 season, Lampard was dismissed before being succeeded at Everton by Sean Dyche. The former Burnley boss took over with the club in 19th place with 15 points. He turned the club’s fortunes around, guiding it to an eventual 17th place finish with 2 points separating themselves and a drop. A 1-0 final day victory against Bournemouth secured the club’s Premier League survival.
Dyche won his first game as the Toffees’ Head Coach, beating Arsenal 1-0 at Goodison Park thanks to a goal from James Tarkowski in the second half (60′).
Dwight McNeil’s seven goals in the league last season made him the club’s leading goal scorer in the top flight. Abdoulaye Doucouré and Demarai Gray scored 5 and 4 goals respectively.
With just a few weeks of the 2020/21 Premier League season remaining, Paul Heckingbottom replaced Chris Wilder, becoming the Blades’ interim Head Coach for the remaining games, which saw the club’s relegation confirmed. Slaviša Jokanović was chosen as Wilder’s permanent successor, but the club dismissed the Serbian in November 2021, with Heckingbottom taking over as Head Coach.
After the defeat against Nottingham Forest in the 2021/22 Championship Play-Off Semi-Finals, it was second time lucky for the Blades, who gained promotion to 2nd place in the 2022/23 season, accumulating 91 points in 46 matches.
Iliman Ndiaye was the Blades’ top goal scorer in the Championship last season with 14 goals, with Oli McBurnie close behind him with 13 goals.
Everton and Sheffield United went head to head for the first time in a competitive match on 2nd September 1893 at Goodison Park. Over the years, the Toffees have the most wins in the fixture, winning 55 of their 135 meetings compared to 49 for the Blades. There have been 31 draws between these two clubs over the years.
Sheffield United got the better of Everton in their most recent match in the Premier League, winning 1-0 at Goodison.
