In its final season, the historic Goodison Park is set to host a 2024/25 Carabao Cup Third Round tie between Everton, led by Head Coach Sean Dyche, and a Southampton side led by Russell Martin in September.

Everton are yet to win this competition, but they have been runners-up on two occasions. The first in 1977 saw them lose the Final 3 – 2 against Aston Villa in what was a second replay at Old Trafford. The Toffees’ other League Cup Final took place back in 1984, where they lost 1 – 0 to Liverpool in a replay at Maine Road.

Moving on to Southampton, they have been runners-up in this competition the same number of times as their Merseyside rivals, doing so in 1979 and 2017. They lost 3 – 2 to Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest, before going on to narrowly miss out on glory against Manchester United, losing by the same scoreline.

As Premier League clubs, both the Toffees and the Saints enter this season’s competition at the Third Round stage.

The most recent League Cup contest between Everton and Southampton took place at Goodison Park back on 2nd October 2018. Theo Walcott (85’) and Danny Ings (44’) scored for their respective teams in what was a 1 – 1 draw in the end. Southampton did go on to win 4 – 3 on penalties.

Overall, Everton and Southampton have met 109 times in all competitions, and it is the Toffees who possess the superior record of 52 victories as of the time of writing. Meanwhile, their South Coast counterparts have 34 wins to their name in this fixture, and there have been 23 draws so far.

This is set to be an enthralling and highly competitive tie, with Sean Dyche’s Everton and Russell Martin’s Southampton looking to take a step closer to the Final of the 2024/25 Carabao Cup.
