The draw for the most recent round of the FA Cup usually brings with it some mouth-watering ties, and this season is no different. Arsenal versus Manchester United is undoubtedly the most eye-catching fixture of the third round this term, with Mikel Arteta’s Gunners set to go toe to toe with Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils at the Emirates Stadium in January 2025.
A win here for either side would of course guarantee them a place in the fourth round of this season’s competition, taking them a step closer to lifting this historic trophy at the equally iconic Wembley Stadium at the Final in May 2025.
The Gunners are going toe to toe with the current holders of this competition in what is an opportunity for the North London Club to make an early statement in the 2024/25 FA Cup. Both of these clubs have a decorated history in Club Football’s oldest domestic cup competition with both having had the honour of lifting this trophy on several occasions over the years.
Starting with Arsenal, they are the club that has won the FA Cup the most times, having so far done so 14 times throughout their illustrious history. They first won it all the way back in the 1929/30 season, when they emerged as 2 – 0 winners against Huddersfield Town thanks to goals from Alex James (16’) and John Lambert (88’).
The Gunners then went on to win the FA Cup in 1935/36 (1 – 0 vs. Sheffield United), 1949/50 (2 – 0 vs. Liverpool), 1970/71 (2 – 1 vs. Liverpool), 1978/79 (3 – 2 vs. Manchester United), 1992/93 (2 – 1 vs. Sheffield Wednesday), 1997/98 (2 – 0 vs. Newcastle United), 2001/02 (2 – 0 vs. Chelsea), 2002/03 (1 – 0 vs. Southampton), 2004/05 (5 – 4 on pens vs. Manchester United), 2013/14 (3 – 2 vs. Hull City), 2014/15 (4 – 0 vs. Aston Villa), 2016/17 (2 – 1 vs. Chelsea), and most recently in the 2019/20 season, when two goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (28’ – Penalty, 67’) were enough for a 2 – 1 win against London rivals Chelsea in that season’s final.
Moving on to Manchester United, they too have been no strangers to getting their hands on the FA Cup over the years, having done so no less than 13 times – the second most of any club, only behind the Gunners.
As mentioned, United are the holders of this competition after beating cross-city rivals Manchester City 2 – 1 at Wembley in the most recent Final in 2024. Their other 12 wins in this prestigious competition came back in 1908/09 (1 – 0 vs. Bristol City), 1947/48 (4 – 2 vs. Blackpool), 1962/63 (3 – 1 vs. Leicester City), 1976/77 (2 – 1 vs. Liverpool), 1982/83 (4 – 0 vs. Brighton), 1984/85 (1 – 0 vs. Everton), 1989/90 (1 – 0 vs. Crystal Palace), 1993/94 (4 – 0 vs. Chelsea), 1995/96 (1 – 0 vs. Liverpool), 1998/99 (2 – 0 vs. Newcastle United), 2003/04 (3 – 0 vs. Millwall), and in 2015/16 when they were 2 – 1 winners after extra time against Crystal Palace.
Arsenal will be looking to prevent Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils from retaining the trophy this season by beating them in this FA Cup Third Round tie in North London at the Emirates Stadium.
Overall, these two clubs have met 16 times in the FA Cup to date, and currently, Arsenal has the better record of 8 victories in ties in this competition against Manchester United, whilst the Red Devils have 7 wins to their name so far.
Anticipation and excitement are building rapidly ahead of what promises to be an enthralling game at the Emirates Stadium in what is the most high profile fixture of the Third Round of the 2024/25 FA Cup. The atmosphere also promises to be special as two giants of English and European Football meet face to face.
