The historic Villa Park will be hosting another FA Cup tie when Unai Emery’s Aston Villa takes on Julen Lopetegui and his West Ham United side in B6 in January 2025. This is a high profile tie between two Premier League clubs, with the atmosphere set to be incredible.
There will be plenty at stake, with a place in the Fourth Round of this season’s competition at stake for both clubs. The Villans will be looking to add an 8th FA Cup to their trophy cabinet, and a win here against the Hammers would be their first step towards doing just that.
Villa’s most recent FA Cup triumph came back in the 1956/57 season when they were able to emerge as 2 – 1 winners against Manchester United with Peter McParland scoring both of the goals for Eric Houghton’s Aston Villa side at the old Wembley that day (68’, 73’).
The West Midlands club’s other victories in this competition came back in 1886/87 (2 – 0 vs. West Bromwich Albion), 1894/95 (1 – 0 vs. West Bromwich Albion), 1896/97 (3 – 2 vs. Everton), 1904/05 (2 – 0 vs. Newcastle United), 1912/13 (1 – 0 vs. Sunderland), and in 1919/20 (1 – 0 vs. Huddersfield Town).
Aston Villa has won this competition the joint 4th most times with 7 alongside Manchester City. Only Tottenham (8), Liverpool (8), Chelsea (8), Manchester United (13), and Arsenal (14) have won this competition more times than the Villans to date.
Moving on to West Ham, they are three time winners of the FA Cup – winning it most recently back in the 1979/80 season when a goal from Hammers club legend Trevor Brooking (13’) got them that historic 1 – 0 win against Arsenal in that final.
As for their other two FA Cup Final triumphs, they came in 1963/64 and 1974/75. The Final in 1964 at the old Wembley Stadium saw the London Club beat Preston North End 3 – 2 thanks to goals from John Sissons (11’), Geoff Hurst (52’), and Ronnie Boyce (90’). The goal scorers for North End that day were Doug Holden (10’) and Alex Dawson (40’).
As for their win in 1975, West Ham were 2 – 0 winners against Fulham at Wembley following two goals from Alan Taylor, who completed his brace in this particular FA Cup Final at the midway point of the second half (60’, 64’).
Overall, these two clubs have met just three times in the history of this competition, and it is Aston Villa who have the superior record of 2 wins compared with West Ham United’s 1 so far.
The last FA Cup tie between these two clubs at Villa Park took place back on 29th January 1977 in what was the fourth round of that season’s cup competition. In the end, a 46,954 strong crowd witnessed a comfortable 3 – 0 victory for Ron Saunders’ Villa, who scored thanks to John Deehan and Dennis Mortimer.
Anticipation and excitement are building rapidly ahead of what promises to be an entertaining game with a tremendous atmosphere to boot when Unai Emery’s Aston Villa take on Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham in the Third Round of the 2024/25 FA Cup at Villa Park.
