Everton and Peterborough United are set to go toe to toe at Goodison Park in the Third Round of the 2024/25 FA Cup in January 2025. Sean Dyche will lead the Toffees into this tie against Posh, who are led by their Head Coach Darren Ferguson. With Everton looking for a positive cup run this season, the Premier League side will be looking to emerge victorious from this tie against their League One counterparts.
Throughout their illustrious history, Everton have most certainly been no strangers to lifting the FA Cup trophy over the years. The Toffees have won this famous competition on no less than 5 occasions, doing so most recently in the 1994/95 season, when a goal from Paul Rideout in the first half (30’) sealed the 1 – 0 victory in the Final at the Old Wembley Stadium in 1995 against Manchester United. United were led that day by Sir Alex Ferguson, father of Peterborough boss Darren.
Everton’s other FA Cup Final victories came in 1905/06 (1 – 0 vs. Newcastle United), 1932/33 (3 – 0 vs. Manchester City), 1965/66 (3 – 2 vs. Sheffield Wednesday), and 1983/84 (2 – 0 vs. Watford).
As for Peterborough United, the third tier outfit had to get through ties in Round One and Round Two of the FA Cup this season to meet their top flight counterparts in the Third Round.
The First Round for Posh saw them beat League Two side Newport County 4 – 2 away from home thanks to goals from Abraham Odoh (27’), Joel Randall (71’), and Ricky-Jade Jones (89’, 90+3’). Anthony Driscoll-Glennon (5’) and Kai Whitmore (7’) both scored for their Welsh hosts on that night.
Then came the second round, when Peterborough met another League Two outfit, this time in the form of Notts County at the ABAX Stadium. It was a 4 – 3 win for Posh, who scored through Ricky-Jade Jones (10’, 73’), Joel Randall (77’), and Abraham Odoh (87’). Cedwyn Scott (13’), Matthew Platt (16’), and George Abbott (90+6’) were all scorers for Notts County that day in what was a thrilling game.
Peterborough has never won the FA Cup, with the furthest they have reached in the competition being the fifth round, which they have done so on just one occasion, getting to this round in the 2021/22 season, going on to lose 2 – 0 against Manchester City.
Overall, Everton and Peterborough United have met on just one previous occasion, which saw Posh host a Second Round tie in the League Cup back on 19th September 2006, in what was a 2 – 1 win for the Toffees that day. They got the win thanks to a Jude Stirling own goal (24’) and a winning goal late on in the contest from club favourite Tim Cahill (87’). Trevor Benjamin was Peterborough’s only goal scorer that day, scoring for the hosts early on in the second half (56’).
Excitement and anticipation are building for this tie in what should be an exciting and entertaining match between Everton and Peterborough United in the Third Round of the FA Cup at Goodison Park in January 2025.
