Manchester City will welcome Aston Villa to the Etihad Stadium when the two clubs go head to head once more in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Pep Guardiola’s City side will look to become the first ever club to win a fourth consecutive Premier League title. Villa, led by Pep’s Spanish compatriot Unai Emery will have their sights set on European qualification for the second successive season.
Last season, City were nearly impossible to beat, racking up their 3rd consecutive Premier League title after managing to leapfrog Arsenal to the summit of the Premier League table following a stellar run of form in the latter half of the campaign. Guardiola’s side ended the season with 89 points, 5 ahead of title rivals Arsenal.
Erling Haaland led the way in terms of goals both in the Premier League and in the City squad. The Norwegian forward scored 36 goals which gave him the league’s golden boot and this also sealed his status as City’s leading goal scorer. Phil Foden came second with 11, whilst World Cup winner Julián Álvarez got 9 league goals himself.
Overall, Manchester City scored 94 goals – the most in the division. This goal tally was 6 more than Arsenal who had the next best record of 88 goals last term. Tied with Newcastle United, Guardiola’s Cityzens conceded the joint least amount of goals with 33 in their 38 matches.
Pep Guardiola succeeded Manuel Pellegrini as Manchester City Head Coach on 1st February 2016. In his first season with the Cityzens (2016/17), City finished 3rd with 78 points, qualifying for the Champions League. Guardiola has won a plethora of trophies during his 7 year tenure at the cub, including: 5 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 EFL Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21) and 2 Community Shields (2018 & 2019).
Following a 1-0 victory against Italian Giants Inter Milan in Istanbul, City not only sealed their maiden UEFA Champions League trophy, but they also completed a historic treble.
After leaving Villarreal, Unai Emery took charge at Aston Villa in October 2022 when he succeeded Steven Gerrard following a 3-0 defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage. Following his appointment, Villa went on a tremendous run of form for the rest of the season, culminating in a match against Brighton, where a win would see them qualify for the Europa Conference League. They did just that, ending the season in 7th place after accumulating a total of 61 points.
Ollie Watkins was the Villa’s leading goal scorer last term with 15 goals to his name in 38 matches. Danny Ings (now at West Ham), Jacob Ramsey and Douglas Luiz were all joint second on the club’s goal-scoring charts with 6 goals each. Emiliano Buendía and Leon Baily got 5 and 4 goals respectively.
The first match ever to take place between Manchester City and Aston Villa came on 21 October 1899. Overall, the two clubs have played each other on 179 occasions as of the time of writing, with City having a superior record of 80 wins in comparison to the Villa’s 57. There have been 42 draws in this fixture to date.
The most recent match to take place between these two teams took place on 12th February 2023, when Manchester City won the game comfortably, with Guardiola’s side getting the better of the Villa, winning 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium. Rodri (4’), İlkay Gündoğan (39’) and Riyad Mahrez (45+1’) all found the back of the net for the home side on the day. It was Ollie Watkins who scored Villa’s only goal of the game half way through the second half (61’).
