Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are going to welcome Dutch giants Feyenoord to the Etihad Stadium, with these clubs going head to head in the League Phase of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League. Three points here would bring City closer to winning the trophy for a second time in their history after securing it for the first time back in 2023.
The Cityzens won their inaugural Champions League title against Inter Milan at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in the city of Istanbul, Turkey. It was a 1 – 0 victory for them, in the end, thanks to a superb strike from their Spanish midfielder Rodri, who was able to find the back of the Inter net midway through the second half (68’).
Throughout their illustrious history, City have won other European honours. In the late 1970s, they won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in the 1969/70 season, where goals from Neil Young (12’) and Club Legend Francis Lee found the back of the net in what was a 2 – 1 victory over Polish side Gornik Zabrze.
They have also won the UEFA Super Cup in the same year that they become the Champions Of Europe, 2023. In this Final, they were 5 – 4 winners on penalties after goals from Youssef En-Nesyri (25’) and Cole Palmer (63’) scored in a 1 – 1 draw that led to City’s victory in the penalty shootout.
Moving on to Feyenoord, they are most certainly a club that are no strangers to success in Europe, just like their counterparts from England. They won the UEFA Champions League back when it was known as the European Cup back in the 1969/70 season. In the 1970 Final at the iconic San Siro in Milan.
Feyenoord were 2 – 1 winners after extra time against Scottish heavyweights Celtic. Rinus Israel (31’) and Ove Kindvall (117’) scored for the Dutch club, whilst Tommy Gemmell (29’) scored for their opponents from Glasgow.
The Dutch club has also won the UEFA Europa League twice when it was known as the UEFA Cup. These title victories came in the 1973/74 and 2001/02 seasons. Their first in the mid-1970s saw them beat Tottenham Hotspur 4 – 2 over the course of two legs, whilst their second and so far most recent triumph in this competition in 2002 saw them beat Germany’s Borussia Dortmund 3 – 2.
Pierre van Hooijdonk (33’ – Pen, 40’) and Jon Dahl Tomasson (50’) both scored for Feyenoord in a final that took place at the club’s home ground, De Kuip in Rotterdam.
Manchester City and Feyenoord have met in a competitive fixture just twice, with both games taking place in the Group Stages of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League. The most recent match was a 1 – 0 win at the Etihad Stadium, where Raheem Sterling scored the winning goal (88’).
The other game at De Kuip was won 3 – 0 by City, with John Stones (2’, 63’), Sergio Aguero (10’), and Gabriel Jesus (25’).
Anticipation and excitement are building rapidly ahead of this League Phase Fixture between Manchester City and Feyenoord at the Etihad Stadium in the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League, where there promises to be an electric atmosphere.
