Manchester City welcomes Real Madrid for this Champions League 2023/24 quarter-final
Manchester City are the holders of the UEFA Champions League after beating Italian Serie A Giants Inter Milan 1 – 0 in last year’s final. This season, their next step on the path to the Wembley Stadium Final is Real Madrid, who they will face over two legs in the 2023/24 Quarter Final. The second leg will take place at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday 16th April 2024.
In the group stages, Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens finished top of a group containing Germany’s RB Leipzig and Serbia’s Red Star Belgrade, accumulating at least 18 points from their 6 matches.
Reigning Danish Champions Copenhagen stood in their way in the Round of 16. City were comfortable 3 – 1 winners in both legs, which saw them emerge victorious from this first knockout round tie 6 – 2 winners on aggregate. This then set up their tie with their Spanish counterparts.
Meanwhile, Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid finished top of a group that included teams such as current Italian Serie A Champions Napoli and Portugal’s SC Braga. Like City, Los Blancos accumulated 18 points from their 6 matches in the Group Stages.
Real Madrid’s Round of 16 opponents were RB Leipzig. The Spanish heavyweights were 1 – 0 winners in the first leg in Leipzig before edging past their German Bundesliga counterparts 2 – 1 on aggregate following a tense 1 – 1 draw at the Santiago Bernabéu in the second leg in Madrid.
As has been previously mentioned, both clubs have experienced success in the UEFA Champions League/European Cup over the years. A goal from Spanish midfielder Rodri at the midway point of the second half (68’) gave City their first and so far only European crown in the 2023 Final in Istanbul.
Moving on to Real Madrid, they are no strangers to winning the UEFA Champions League/European Cup – they, for example won the first five European Cups in a row between 1955 and 1960. Their 14 titles came in the following seasons: 1955/56, 1956/57, 1957/58, 1958/1959, 1959/60, 1965/66, 1997/98, 1999/00, 2001/02, 2013/14, 2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2021/22.
Overall, Manchester City and Real Madrid have met in the UEFA Champions League on 10 occasions, with City having the superior record of 4 wins in comparison to 3 for Los Blancos. There have been precisely 3 draws between these two European heavyweights to date.
The most recent match between these two clubs was the second leg of last season’s semi-finals, which City won 4 – 0 thanks to goals from Bernardo Silva (23’, 37’), Manuel Akanji (76’), and Julian Alvarez (90+1’).
There is no better way to experience the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League Quarter Final Second Leg tie between Manchester City and Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium than with an Eventmasters VIP Hospitality Package. Book now to avoid disappointment!
