Manchester City will welcome a newly promoted Sheffield United side to the Etihad Stadium once again in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens have ambitions of making history by becoming the first ever Premier League club to win four titles in a row. Meanwhile, the Blades, will be looking to avoid relegation and secure a second successive season in the Premier League.
Last year, Manchester City were eventually crowned as Premier League Champions following a hard fought title race against their North London counterparts Arsenal for much of the season. City ended the 2022/23 Premier League season with 5 clear of the Gunners on 89 points. Erling Haaland led the way in goals both for his club and the league itself with an incredible goal tally of 36. Phil Foden with 11 was second in the City goal scoring charts whilst Harry Kane came second in the league with 30 goals to his name in all.
As has become the norm with a Guardiola City team, they were in very clinical form in front of goal, scoring 94 goals in all, 6 more than Arsenal who had the next best goal record last term with 88. The Cityzens were strong defensively, too, as they, alongside Newcastle United, had the joint-best defensive record in the league after only conceding 33 times in 38 matches.
Pep Guardiola has long been one of the biggest names in European Football, and after very successful spells at FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich, the Spaniard joined Manchester City in February 2016 – and in doing so he became Manuel Pellegrini’s permanent successor at the Etihad Stadium.
Overall, Guardiola has won more than 10 major trophies to date whilst in charge of the Cityzens: 5 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 EFL Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21), 2 Community Shields (2018 & 2019) and 1 UEFA Champions League (2022/23).
City’s maiden Champions League win last season completed a famous treble. Pep’s team were able to beat Italian Giants Inter Milan 1-0 in the final in Istanbul, courtesy of a Rodri goal in the second half (68’).
In the final weeks of the 2020/21 Premier League season, Paul Heckingbottom took over as interim Head Coach with the Blades eventually getting relegated. At the start of the 2021/22 Championship season Slaviša Jokanović was named as Blades boss only for Heckingbottom to be chosen as his successor in November 2021. Sheffield United finished in 5th place that season, losing to Nottingham Forest in their Championship Play-Off Semi Final tie.
Last season was a much more successful one for Paul Heckingbottom’s Blades, who managed to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League after finishing as the Championship’s runners-up with 91 points.
Iliman Ndiaye who was the leading goal scorer for the Blades last term with 14 goals. Scotland’s Oli McBurnie was close behind the Cameroon international with 13 goals in all.
Manchester City and Sheffield United met in the first time ever on 4th March 1893. Overall, these two clubs have played each other 126 times with the Cityzens having the superior record at the time of writing with 54 wins as opposed to the Blades’ 38. There have been 34 draws in this fixture over the years.
The most recent match to be played between these two teams came on 22nd April 2023 in an FA Cup Semi Final tie at the famous and iconic Wembley Stadium. Pep Guardiola’s City side won 3-0 thanks to goals coming from a Riyad Mahrez hat-trick under the arch (43’ (Pen), 61’, 66’).
