Manchester City v Manchester United FA Cup Final at Wembley
One of world football’s most famous and eye-catching derbies will be taking place at Wembley Stadium in the 2024 FA Cup Final on Saturday, 25th May 2024. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City will be going toe to toe with a Manchester United side led by their Dutch Head Coach Erik Ten Hag in what will be a showpiece occasion in the English Capital.
Both are Premier League heavyweights, but they have both already made history. This year’s Final will be the first since 1885 to feature the same two teams as the previous season’s FA Cup Final. The only previous time this happened 139 years ago saw Blackburn Rovers face Scottish outfit Queen’s Park in a repeat of the Final in 1884. Rovers won both finals, 2 – 1 and 2 – 0 respectively. These games took place at the Kennington Oval.
Manchester City and Manchester United have won the FA Cup a combined 19 times – 7 for the Cityzens and 12 for United. Starting with City, to date, they have won this iconic title in 1904 (1 – 0 vs. Bolton Wanderers), 1934 (2 – 1 vs. Portsmouth), 1956 (3 – 1 vs. Birmingham City), 1969 (1 – 0 vs. Leicester City), 2011 (1 – 0 vs. Stoke City), 2019 (6 – 0 vs. Watford) and in 2023 where they were 2 – 1 winners against rivals United thanks to goals from Ilkay Gundogan (1’, 51’). It was Bruno Fernandes who scored the Red Devils’ only goal of the game from the penalty spot (33’).
Moving on to Erik Ten Hag’s United, they have a great history in this competition too. They have won it a total of 12 times – their wins to date have come in 1909 (1 – 0 vs. Bristol City), 1948 (4 – 2 vs. Blackpool), 1963 (3 – 1 vs. Leicester City), 1977 (2 – 1 vs. Liverpool), 1983 (4 – 0 vs. Brighton & Hove Albion, Replay), 1985 (1 – 0 vs. Everton), 1990 (1 – 0 vs. Crystal Palace, Replay), 1994 (4 – 0 vs. Chelsea), 1996 (1 – 0 vs. Liverpool), 1999 (2 – 0 vs. Newcastle United), 2004 (3 – 0 vs. Millwall) and in 2016, their most recent triumph in this prestigious cup competition, beating Crystal Palace 2 – 1 in extra time through goals from Juan Mata (81’) and Jesse Lingard (110’). The Eagles’ only goal came from Jason Puncheon (78’).
These sides of course met in the 2023 FA Cup Final, and all eyes will be on the English Capital on 25th May when two fierce rivals go head to head to win this iconic and historic trophy.
Overall, Manchester City and Manchester United have only met in one final, but they have played against each other a total of 10 times. Their first came when City were known as Ardwick, and this saw United win 5 – 1. City did, however, win their next FA Cup meeting on 27th March 1926 in what was a 3 – 0 win for the Cityzens in that year’s Semi-Final at Brammall Lane.
As of the time of writing, Manchester United has the most wins between these two teams in this famous domestic cup competition, with 6 wins compared to 4 for Manchester City.
