Manchester United, led by their Portuguese Head Coach Ruben Amorim, are set to welcome the reigning Norwegian Champions Bodo/Glimt to Old Trafford for their League Phase Fixture in the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League. This is set to be an intriguing contest at the Theatre Of Dreams, with the Red Devils, as one of the favourites, looking to win this season’s competition.
Amorim replaced former Head Coach Erik Ten Hag on Monday 11th November 2024, leaving Portuguese Heavyweights Sporting CP for Old Trafford. At Sporting, he won 2 Primeira Liga titles (2020/21 & 2023/24) and two Taca da Liga titles (Portuguese Cup) in 2020/21 and 2021/22.
If United won the Europa League this season, it would be the second time that the club has achieved this in its illustrious history. The inaugural title win in this competition came back in the 2016/17 season under the stewardship of then-Head Coach Jose Mourinho, when they beat Dutch Club Ajax 2 – 0 through goals from Paul Pogba (18’) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (48’).
As of the time of writing, the club has also lifted the UEFA Champions League on three occasions, doing so in the 1967/68, 1998/99, and 2007/08 seasons. In these seasons, they were able to beat Benfica 4 – 1, Bayern Munich 2 – 1, and Chelsea 6 – 5 on penalty kicks, respectively.
The Red Devils also beat FC Barcelona 2 – 1 in the 1990/91 campaign to win that year’s European Cup Winners’ Cup. They also won the UEFA Super Cup in 1991 after beating Red Star Belgrade 1 – 0, who became European Champions in that same year.
Moving on to Bodo/Glimt, they have never lifted a European trophy as of yet, and in the Europa League, they have never got beyond the Group Stages. Their most recent participation in the 2022/23 edition of this prestigious competition saw them finish 3rd in Group A, with their only win coming against Swiss side FC Zurich, who they were able to beat 2 – 1 at home.
This third-place finish in the Group Stages saw them move into that season’s UEFA Conference League. They reached the Knockout Round Play-Offs, where they were beaten 1 – 0 over two legs by Polish outfit Lech Poznan.
Manchester United and Bodo/Glimt have never played each other in a competitive fixture in any European Competition, so this inaugural tie will not only be a historic occasion but also promise to be an opportunity for Ruben Amorim’s side to take a significant step closer to achieving their goal of winning this season’s UEFA Europa League.
There is plenty of anticipation and excitement ahead of this League Phase Fixture in this season’s UEFA Europa League, and the atmosphere at Old Trafford for this crucial fixture will surely be electric.
