Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United side is set to take on a newly promoted Ipswich Town side led by Kieran McKenna at Old Trafford in the 2024/25 Premier League season. The Red Devils are targeting a top-four finish and a return to the highly coveted UEFA Champions League, and a win against the Tractor Boys would help them achieve this objective.
Erik Ten Hag was dismissed as Manchester United Head Coach in October 2024, with Ruben Amorim taking over as his successor at the club, joining from Portuguese Heavyweights Sporting CP.
The 2022/23 season was former Head Coach Erik Ten Hag’s first with Manchester United, and it was a successful one, with the Dutchman leading the club to third place in the Premier League table after securing a total of no less than 75 points from their 38 matches – qualification for the Champions League had been secured. United did win the League Cup at Wembley after goals from Casemiro (33’) and Marcus Rashford (39’) secured a 2 – 0 win against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.
Last season, his second at the helm, saw his side get knocked out at the Group Stages of the UEFA Champions League, whilst the 60 points they earned from their all 38 of their Premier League matches was enough for 8th place. However, there was a very positive ending to the season, when goals from Alejandro Garnacho (30’) and Kobbie Mainoo (39’) secured them a famous 2 – 1 win against local rivals Manchester City to win the 2024 FA Cup. This was the 6th time that the club had won this in its illustrious history.
This win in the FA Cup Final from last season saw them secure qualification for the Europa League.
New Boss Ruben Amorim will be hoping to return the club to the UEFA Champions League, whilst targeting silverware in other competitions over the course of the 2024/25 season.
Moving on to Ipswich Town, their Head Coach, Kieran McKenna, has been in charge since his appointment on 16 December 2021. McKenna had previously been at Manchester United in various positions, including Under 18s Manager, first team coach, and assistant manager under Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Ralf Rangnick, before taking over as Head Coach of Ipswich.
After an 11thplace finish in League One in his first half-season in charge, he led them to promotion to the EFL Championship via a 2ndplace finish in the English Third Tier in the 2022/23 season. Then, in what was an extraordinary feat, they followed this up with promotion back to the Premier League the season after 96 points in 46 matches was enough to see them finish second place and just a point behind second-tier Champions Leicester City in the end.
This will be the first time that these two clubs have gone head to head in a Premier League fixture since United won 1 – 0 at Portman Road thanks to a winning goal from Ruud Van Nistelrooy from the penalty spot (45’) on 27th April 2002. The Red Devils have also won their last encounter at Old Trafford, beating them 4 – 0 on 22nd September 2001.
In this home fixture, the goals for the hosts came from Ronny Johnsen (13’), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (20’, 90’) and Andrew Cole (90’).
In all competitions, these two clubs have played against each other 57 times, and United has the superior record of 29 wins compared to 19 for the Tractor Boys. There have been 9 draws between the teams so far.
Manchester United and Ipswich Town will play at Old Trafford in the 2024/25 Premier League season. This game is set to be entertaining and competitive, with a fantastic atmosphere to boot.
