Manchester United are set to play Chelsea once again at Old Trafford in what is one of the Premier League’s most talked-about fixtures in the 2023/24 season. Erik Ten Hag’s United will have sights set on the title race and the battle for the top four, whereas the Blues will look to re-establish themselves in the top seven and secure a return to European football under new Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino.
Following their 6th place finish in the Premier League at the conclusion of the 2021/22 season, Manchester United looked to make progress last year (2022/23) under new Head Coach Erik Ten Hag, and they most certainly did achieve significant progress. The Red Devils finished 3 places and 17 points better off, settling for a 3rd place finish with 75 points at the end of last season. They made the FA Cup Final whilst also beating Newcastle United 2-0 to win the Carabao Cup back in February 2023.
With 17 goals, Marcus Rashford found the back of the net the most times in the Premier League for Manchester United last season, whilst it was Bruno Fernandes who scored the second most Premier League goals last term with 8 in total. Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho got 6 goals each.
Alongside Arsenal, Manchester United conceded the joint second least amount of goals, conceding just 43 times in 38 matches. Only Newcastle United and League Champions Manchester City conceded less, with a record of 33 goals conceded in total last term.
After being Head Coach at the likes of Go Ahead Eagles, Bayern Munich II and Utrecht, Erik Ten Hag took charge at Dutch Giants Ajax in 2017. When the Dutchman departed for the Red Devils, Ten Hag had led the club to no less than 6 trophies: 3 Eredivisie titles (2018/19, 2020/21 & 2021/22), 2 KNVB Cups (2018/19 & 2020/21) and the Johan Cruyff Shield in 2019.
Ten Hag and Ajax famously beat the likes of Real Madrid (4-1) and Juventus (2-1) to get to the semi-finals, where they lost on away goals against Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs after a 3-3 aggregate draw over the two-legged tie.
After Graham Potter was dismissed by Chelsea in early April 2023 before Frank Lampard took over as the club’s interim Head Coach for the final few weeks of the 2022/23 Premier League season where the Blues finished in 12th place with 44 points from their 38 matches.
Mauricio Pochettino was announced as Potter’s successor at Stamford Bridge in May 2023 after a spell at French Champions PSG, where he won plenty of trophies: Coupe de France (2020/21), a Trophée des Champions (2020) and the Ligue 1 title in the 2021/22 season.
The Argentine is best known in England for his spells with Southampton and Spurs. He joined Spurs after finishing in 8th place with the Saints, going on to lead the Lilywhites to two 3rd place finishes and a 2nd place finish in the 2016/17 season. Pochettino and Spurs got to the aforementioned Champions League semi-final in 2019, beating Ajax to get to the final. Tottenham went on to lose 2-0 to Liverpool in the final.
Manchester United and Chelsea played against each other competitively for the first time on 25th December 1905. Out of their 193 meetings, it is the Red Devils with more wins with 82 compared to the Blues’ 55. There have been 56 draws between these two clubs as of the time of writing.
