Last season, Manchester United secured a 3rd place finish in the Premier League, securing Champions League football after accumulating 75 points. The Red Devils, together with Arsenal, had the joint second-best defensive record in the entire division last term, conceding on just 43 occasions in their 38 matches. Only Manchester City and Newcastle United had a better record after conceding just 33 times each.
Progress was most definitely made at United last season, finishing 3 places higher and 17 points better off than they were by the end of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign. Marcus Rashford was Manchester United’s top goal scorer in the Premier League last term with 17 goals, whilst Portugal international Bruno Fernandes was second with 8 to his name. Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho got 6 goals each.
Before making to move to Manchester United, Erik Ten Hag had gained experience at multiple clubs before he succeeded Marcel Keizer at Dutch Giants Ajax in 2017. Over the course of his 5 years at the club, he led the club to a number of trophies (6 in all): 3 Eredivisie titles (2018/19, 2020/21 & 2021/22), 2 KNVB Cups (2018/19 & 2020/21) and he Johan Cruyff Shield in 2019.
One of Ten Hag’s most notable achievements whilst with Ajax was in 2019, when he led the club to the Champions League Semi-Final after beating Real Madrid 4-1 and Juventus 2-1 in previous rounds of that year’s competition. They were unfortunate to lose to Spurs in the semi-final, losing on away goals after the two-legged tie had ended 3-3.
Manchester United, following two interim spells under former Red Devils midfielder Michael Carrick and then Ralf Rangnick, hired Erik Ten Hag to be Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s permanent successor at Old Trafford in April 2022. Last season (2022/23), was his first full season in charge, guiding the club to an FA Cup final and the aforementioned 3rd place finish in the Premier League, securing Champions League football.
Following Graham Potter’s departure to Chelsea on 8th September 2022, former Shakhtar Donetsk and Sassuolo Head Coach Roberto De Zerbi was hired by Brighton as his successor just over a week later. The Italian was able to guide the Seagulls to a 6th place finish following an incredible season where they were able to secure European football for the first time in the Seagulls’ more than 120-year history. Alexis Mac Allister (now playing for Liverpool) was the club’s leading goal scorer with 10 goals, with German midfielder Pascal Gross close behind the World Cup Winner with 9 goals to his name. Solly March, Kaoru Mitoma and current Arsenal forward Leandro Trossard all got 7 goals each.
Manchester United and Brighton first met competitively on 16th January 1909 in what was an FA Cup First Round tie where the Red Devils won 1-0. Overall, the two clubs have played against each other on 31 occasions to date, and it is United with a superior record of 20 wins as opposed to the Seagulls’ 6. There have been just 5 draws between these two clubs at the time of writing.
The most recent match to have taken place between these two teams took place on 4th May 2023 at the AMEX Stadium, where Manchester United lost 1-0 in the Premier League against Brighton. Alexis Mac Allister scored a late winner via a penalty (90+9’).
