Meanwhile, Sean Dyche and Everton will look to make progress up the table and to avoid relegation more comfortably on this occasion.
Erik Ten Hag has been a name that has been consistently increasing in terms of reputation over the last few years and his reputation both in the Netherlands and the wider European football scene was done the world of good as a result of his tenure at Dutch Giants Ajax, whom he joined in 2017, replacing Marcel Keizer. During his time at the club, Ten Hag won no less than 6 trophies for Ajax: 3 Eredivisie titles (2018/19, 2020/21 & 2021/22), 2 KNVB Cups (2018/19 & 2020/21) and the Johan Cruyff Shield in 2019.
Ajax also famously beat Real Madrid 4-1 and Juventus 2-1 on their way to a UEFA Champions League semi-final meeting with Tottenham Hotspur. Ten Hag’s side narrowly missed out on a spot in the final following a defeat on away goals following an enthralling two legs, which ended in a 3-3 draw.
After Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick had finished their respective spells as Manchester United’s interim Head Coach, Erik Ten Hag was finally named as Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s permanent successor at Old Trafford in April 2022. In his first full season, 2022/23, the Dutch Head Coach led the club to an impressive 3rd place finish with 75 points, 3 places and 17 points better off than they were by the end of the season before (2021/22), where they finished 6th with 58 points.
Only Newcastle United and League Champions Manchester City conceded less than Manchester United, with a record of 33 goals conceded in total last term. United, tied with Arsenal, only conceded 43 times in 38 matches.
Marcus Rashford scored the most goals in the Premier League for United last season with 17, whilst Bruno Fernandes got the next most goals for the club with 8. Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho got 6 goals each.
Frank Lampard, following a disappointing set of results in the first half of last season, was dismissed by Everton on 23rd January 2023 before former Watford and Burnley boss Sean Dyche was announced as the former Chelsea midfielder’s replacement at Goodison Park just a week later. And, following an upturn in results, including a final day 1-0 win against Bournemouth to secure 17th place with 36 points, meaning that they had avoided relegation to the Championship by one place and just 2 points.
With 7 goals, Dwight McNeil was Everton’s top goal scorer last season, with Abdoulaye Doucouré close behind him with 5 goals to his name in the Premier League, including the winner against Bournemouth on the final day of last season. Demarai Gray and Anthony Gordon (now at Newcastle United) got 4 and 3 goals each for the Toffees.
Manchester United and Everton first met on 24th September 1892. United have won 93 of their 211 meetings, whilst the Toffees have 71 wins in this fixture. There have been 47 draws to date.
The most recent meeting between these two clubs took place in the Premier League at Old Trafford on 8th April 2023, where it was Manchester United who secured a comfortable 2-0 win. Scott McTominay (36’) and Anthony Martial (71’) got the goals for Erik Ten Hag’s Red Devils that day.
