Spurs and Manchester United, two of English football’s biggest and most illustrious clubs, are set to meet once more at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the 2024/25 Premier League season. After very narrowly missing out last season, the goal for Ange Postecoglou’s Lilywhites this term is to secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

Since taking over on June 6, 2023, Spurs have made significant progress and only narrowly fell short of a top-four spot. In the end, the North London club had to settle for a 5th-place finish with 66 points to their name, 2 adrift of fourth place. This did still, however, see them seal a return to European Football after one season away via the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League.

During the Australian’s time at the club, a number of records have been successfully broken. 23 points were earned in his first 9 games in charge (7 wins and 2 draws), with the previous record being that of 22 by Guus Hiddink and Chelsea in the 2009/10 season.

Not only that, he is also the first manager to be awarded two consecutive Man of the Match awards in his first two months in charge. Postecoglou was also the first Greek-born manager to take charge of a Premier League club.

Moving on to Manchester United, Sporting CP Head Coach Ruben Amorim succeeded previous boss Erik Ten Hag at Old Trafford, officially joining the club on 11th November 2024. During his time with Sporting, he led the team to two Primeira Liga titles in 2020/21 and the 2023/24 seasons, whilst also winning the Taça da Liga twice in 2020/21 and 2021/22, as well as one Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira in 2021.

Previous Head Coach Erik Ten Hag had been in charge of the Red Devils since his appointment on 21st April 2022. His first season in charge (2022/23) saw him lead his side to a third-place finish, earning 75 points from 38 matches, and qualifying for the following season’s UEFA Champions League.

In the 2023/24 campaign, Ten Hag’s United ended up in 8th place whilst also being knocked out in the Group Stages of the UEFA Champions League. However, there was success in the FA Cup, where the Red Devils got the better of reigning Premier League Champions and cross-city rivals 2 – 1 in the final to secure silverware and qualification for the UEFA Europa League.

It was after a disappointing start to the current campaign when the Manchester United board decided to relieve the Dutchman of his duties before hiring current boss Amorim.

These two clubs have met on a total of 201 occasions, with United having the superior record of 96 wins compared with the Lilywhites’ total of 54 to date. As of the time of writing, there have also been 51 draws.
