West Ham United will go head to head with Arsenal at the London Stadium in the 2023/24 Premier League season. David Moyes’ Hammers will look to re-establish themselves in the top seven after a midtable finish last term. Arsenal, led by Spanish Head Coach Mikel Arteta will look to lead the Gunners to their first Premier League title since 2004.
David Moyes began his second stint in charge of West Ham United on 29th December 2019 and in the middle of the 2019/20 Premier League season. Moyes was became Manuel Pellegrini’s permanent successor at the London Stadium, and he joined the club when they were 17th in the Premier League table. The Scot managed to lead the Hammers to a 16th place finish with 39 points – 5 clear of the bottom three.
In the following season (2020/21), Moyes’ Hammers finished as high as 6th place with 65 points. This was a record finish for the club who in securing a top six finish secured Europa League Football. They reached the semi-final of the Europa League in the 2021/22 season, losing 3-1 to German Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt on aggregate over two legs. In the Premier League, West Ham secured a spot in the Europa Conference League with a 7th place finish, accumulating 56 points – just 2 behind Manchester United in 6th.
Last season saw West Ham win the Europa Conference League Final in Prague, beating Italian side Fiorentina 2-1, courtesy of goals from Saïd Benrahma (62’ – Penalty) and Jarrod Bowen (90’). Giacomo Bonaventura got the only goal for I Viola (67’). This was the club’s first European trophy win since the Hammers won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1965, where they were able to beat 1860 Munich 2-0 with Alan Sealey getting both of the goals (70’ & 72’).
In the league, Moyes’ West Ham United side recorded a 14th place finish after accumulating 40 points.
On 20th December 2019, former Manchester City Assistant Manager Mikel Arteta was appointed as Arsenal’s new Head Coach to permanently succeed Unai Emery at the Emirates Stadium. Following a 5th place finish in the 2021/22 Premier League season, Arsenal went on to be in a competitive title race in 2022/23 with Manchester City. Arteta’s Gunners led the way at one stage but they eventually lost out to Pep Guardiola’s side by a margin of 5 points.
During Arteta’s tenure, the club have won silverware. They won a record 14th FA Cup trophy in the 2019/20 season, beating rivals Chelsea 2-1. They were also 5-4 winners on penalties against Liverpool in August 2020.
Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Ødegaard were the Arsenal’s joint leading goal scorers, scoring 15 goals each for the Gunners last term. Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus were close behind with 14 and 11 goals in the Premier League respectively.
West Ham United and Arsenal met competitively for the very first time on 13th January 1906 in what was a 1-1 draw in an FA Cup 1st Round tie. Overall, it is the Gunners with the most victories in this fixture with 72 victories in their 148 meetings compared to the Hammers’ 35. There have been 41 draws between these two clubs as of the time of writing.
The most recent match to take place between these two teams came on 16th April 2023 where West Ham United and Arsenal played out a 2-2 draw in the Premier League at the London Stadium. Saïd Benrahma (33’ – Penalty) and Jarrod Bowen (54’) scored for the home team, whilst it was Gabriel Jesus (7’) and Martin Ødegaard (10’) who found the back of the net for the Gunners.
