West Ham United are set to go head-to-head with Bournemouth at the London Stadium in the 2023/24 Premier League season. The Hammers, led by Head Coach David Moyes will have their sights set on European qualification this season whereas Andoni Iraola’s Cherries will want to climb further up the table after avoiding an immediate relegation back down to the Championship last term.
David Moyes was appointed as West Ham United Head Coach for the second time in his career on 29th December 2019, and in doing so he became Manuel Pellegrini’s permanent successor at the London Stadium. By the end of the 2019/20 season Moyes managed to prevent the Hammers getting relegated, leading them to a 16th place in the Premier League table before a record breaking 6th place finish came along in the following season (2020/21) when the club accumulated no less than 65 points in 38 games. Moyes’ team finished just 1 point behind 5th placed Leicester City and 2 points behind Chelsea in 4th.
A top six finish saw West Ham qualify for the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League, where they managed to reach the semi-final, only to lost against German Bundesliga team Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1 on aggregate over the two legged tie. A 7th place finish was secured in the Premier League that season, seeing them qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League.
They did finish 14th in the Premier League last season, accumulating 40 points over the course of the season and a very comfortable 6 points clear of the drop. Moyes’ side did reach the Europa Conference League Final in Prague, where they managed to secure a 2-1 against Italy’s Fiorentina, courtesy of goals coming from Saïd Benrahma (62’ – Penalty) and Jarrod Bowen (90’). midfielder Giacomo Bonaventura got the only goal for Vincenzo Italiano’s side (67’).
Saïd Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen were the joint leading goal scorers in the Premier League for West Ham last season (2022/23), both scoring 6 goals. Michail Antonio got 5 goals, whilst Declan Rice and Lucas Paquetá got on the scoresheet 4 times each.
Andoni Iraola was announced as Gary O’Neil’s successor at the Vitality Stadium in June 2023. Bournemouth had just managed to avoid relegation and they will look to Iraola to guide them up the Premier League table. Iraola began his managerial career at AEK Larnaca (2018 – 2019) before moving on to Spanish side Mirandes (2019 – 2020).
His most recent job in management was with Madrid based club Rayo Vallecano, who he joined in August 2020. After guiding Los Franjirrojos to promotion to LaLiga (2020/21), Iraola led the club to it’s second Copa Del Rey semi-final appearance, losing to Real Betis (2021/22). The club finished in 11th place last season with 49 points (2022/23).
Philip Billing was Bournemouth’s leading goal scorer in the league last season with 7, closely followed by Dominic Solanke, who got 6 goals to his name. Jefferson Lerma (now with Crystal Palace) and summer signing Marcus Tavernier got 5 goals each.
West Ham United and Bournemouth met for the very first time in a competitive fixture on 16th February 1929 in an FA Cup 5th round tie where the two teams drew 1-1. West Ham went on to win the replay 3-1 at Upton Park. Out of their 17 meetings to date, the Hammers have won 8 in comparison to the Cherries’ 4. There have been 5 draws between these two clubs to date.
The most recent meeting between these two teams took place on 23rd April 2023 when West Ham United were 4-0 winners in the Premier League against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. Michail Antonio (5’), Lucas Paquetá (12’), Declan Rice (43’) and Pablo Fornals (72’) all scored on that day for the Hammers.
